well....I broke something last night....

tranny fluid everywhere,
there's a mess all over the underside of the car, and its dripping quite a bit, etc.

So far I can't tell where exactly its leaking from.

Last night on the way home the car drove fine but was making a louder whining noise during deceleration,
it's made this annoying whining noise for almost a couple years now, but as of last night it is more prominent.

So now its parked in my garage till I figure out what is leaking,
and I guess it also means I get to stop procrastinating on the clutch and get that done!

first break in 3 years...not too bad I guess.

yeah there's so much fluid all over the place, hard to imagine the clutch not getting some, but that clutch was overdue for replacement anyways.

I went to the track with a buddy and on the way home it sounded like he had straight cut gears. He had a huge leak of transmission fluid and he took it to the dealer fearing the worst. It turned out to the be rear main seal. His s/n on here is jumpin fool. I shot him a link to this thread in hopes he sees something familiar.

Red face

yeah, well, sorry I haven't updated you on the status Doc.
They changed out the rear seal on the tranny and refilled the fluid and....
still had a leak.

Diagnosis - Cracked case(Supposedly caused by abuse(wheelhop, racing) = not warrantied

End result - Need new tranny(probably splurge for one w/LSD)
Probably upgrade axles while I'm at it.(The Chevy recommendation for preventing a cracked tranny case.)

So, about 4 or $5k in parts/labor and I'll be race ready, hopefully for Langley(21May)

damn, that sucks. So now we have a tvs car out so no more testing. And you were one that would give frequent updates too.

Hope you get it fixed super fast and cheap.

Did you still have all your gear or are any of them gone? When I broke 3rd it cracked the case on the inside of the bell hosuing and poured out tranny fluid. I hate the weak ass tranny's GM gave us.

im gonna guess a cracked tranny case, it got low on fluid and the noise is due to lack of lube,

nice times though, ive heard that your car with the tvs is doing well.

all the gears are still there and working fine, even the clutch is holding a load still.

weird.

so it sounds like you guys are saying that a cracked housing usually can't be seen externally,
and if I pull the tranny out I should be able to see something inside the housing where the clutch nests?

Possibly it could be cracked in there. When you have it out, you should be able to find it pretty quick as to where it's leaking from. Your bottom plug just didn't come loose did it? That would be an easy fix, but it's worth having a look at.

Some Cobalts come with LSD, not all. Yours looks to be just an axle. No reddish fluid is a good sign along with your description as to what happened!

yes this is true everything points to an axel except 1 part i can put it in and out of gear without pushing the clutch pedal while the engine is running
