Why open diffs and burnouts dont mix.......

Peg Leggers, One Legged, Single Wheel Peel. Open Differential, whatever you call it, its bad to do burnouts without a locking or limited slip differential, heres why:

New differential gears on top, abused ones on the bottom. Notice there are no bearings here, thats because there are no bearings in the differential. See the little dish shaped washer, and the big flat washer? Those are the shims that the gears ride on. Both are damaged/burned. Where are the other two??? Glad you asked, they are FUSED to the gears. This damage is the result of burnouts. Single Wheel Burnouts= EPIC fail.

Both tires will spin on an open diff when the traction between the two tires is the same. But if the traction between them is different the tire with LESS traction spins, and turns the differential gears very fast, something they arent designed to do

2 Open diff burnouts, No tranny problems yet and I've been to the strip probably 10 times with this car and multiple times on the street.

Wow I guess you guys are right, burnouts probably increase the life span of the differential, this must be a freak occurence or defective gears

Or driver error. 1 wheel spinning = don't do a burnout.

atlast you discovered it by trial and error. I did some burn outs in my old school tahoe one day and everything seamed fine untill I put it in reverse and gunned it out the drive way.. The rear yoke broke at the bolts exploded it.... ( first night it was real cold since summer )

Luckily I had some coonnects and They have a 24 hour maintenance and parts place for fleet trucks specalizing in Drive shafts and such.

They sold me the yoke with a seal already attatched that didn't match up to my differential so I re-installed it a couple times before I just said WTF and found the old one to compare it to. The seal they had on it was for an earlier rear end on the chevys.. I drove around with a leaky rear for a week in middle of January all because I thought I could fix it in a couple hours. Lots of **** can be prevented but learning by experience is what makes some one understand more about the vehilce then reading or hearing can ever do.

Gear box grease has to be one of the most nasty smells I have ever had to deal with.

In a Grand Am I exploded a solenoid housing I believe it was by doing burnouts.

Didn't you go through a tranny? I could be wrong but I thought one time at the track you ended up getting towed. Like I said, not sure if that was you or not.

As for the information on the tranny, it is so true. Just because its not broken yet, does not mean it doesnt look like that inside the tranny. Only a fool would think it won't hurt anything.

only problem I've ever had was a broken shifter linkage roll pin. Easy fix. Nothing internal.

my bad, I thought you said open diffs, which is what my car is. In my case, I've never done 1 wheeled burnouts, it's always been both wheels.

I occasionally do them in the rain... Not ***** to the wall though and both wheels usually end up spinning good.

Thats the way we 2.2's roll.

Actually, after the lightweight flywheel, burnouts aren't difficult at all.
