i broke my factory headuint 06 lsj, if i buy another 06lsj headunit, will i have to bring it to the dealer or anything to make it work. r can i just plug it back in and everything work fine? i dont use xm or anything. i just wanna know will the second hand headunit be locked?

 

yes u will have to take it to the dealership the second HU will be locked. They are set to a particular VIN so the second hu will have a different VIN programmed and will show locked in any other vehicle. The dealership can reprogram rather quickly too but how much they charge well thats the mystery you will have to find out

 

ok because im picking up my friends lnf headunit and hopefully it plugs into the factory harness. if it does do that. if the steering wheel controls dont work, thats ok. i'll call up the dealer tomorrow and find out how much it is then let everyone on this thread know the price. i just hope i dont have to splice anything. just a simple plug and screw back into the dash lol

 

wait a minute u said 06 LSJ to 06 LSJ. when did LNF come into the equation? 07+ HU will not work without hell as explained in this thread

 

I have a 2008 Cobalt SS TC and I was wondering if anyone knows if a 2010 Black hu with the usb port will work in my car? I read somewhere that 2010 hu wont work in anything other than a 2010?? Is this true?

Here it is (From GM) 2010 Head units will only work in 2010 cars. The data is now (for 2010) transported on a high speed line system, 2009 and back GM radios were not using that system. GM says 2010 head units will NEVER work for anything but the car it was in.

that makes sense. well i understand... it doesn't really make sense as far as why GM would do that. I just thought i remembered someone putting a 2010 into an 07 without problems. but either it was an 09 and im tripping or idk

 

they said as long as the second hand oem headunit works properly, it will cost 104$ for the reprogram of the VIN from the dealer. so there ya go

Bump, has anyone been able to redo a 2007 HU in a 2006 with less trouble? I have spoken with someone who has the wiring diagram and should be able to make a plug and play connector. I have a feeling that the trouble will come with the relearning process at the dealership...

 

right recreating the connector is fairly easy

 

So then the issue is with the programming side of it then? The best price I got from a dealership was $130 working or not. I'm not even going to bother buying it until I can find someone who isn't going to charge me out the ass for something that may work.

 

I did the whole swap and blew out my fuse. So I changed the fuse and now my head unit just says locked? Any way I could get this fixed?

I just got done swaping a 2007 head unit into my 2005 cobalt. Sure enough the radio was locked. For those of you who want to know how to unlock the radio you will most definitely need a GM tech 2. I brought my car to a couple appointments at the dealership and they kept telling me there was no connection with radio through the tech 2. The reason behind that is because the head units in the newer cobalts run on higher power (15amp) fuse. When you plug in the tech 2 follow these steps:
Step 1: chose diagnostics
Step 2: select the year 2007 and up depending on which model your new head unit is coming out of, mine came out of a 2007 so I chose 2007. Then
Step 3: select your body style (mine was the letter A)
Step 4: select either entertainment or body control module. (Mine was under entertainment)
Step 5: scroll down to radio and select it.
Step 6: it will ask you if you want to do a vin number relearn and just select ok
Step 7: after it clears out code then you will see your head unit say "No Vin" turn off the ignition and turn on your car.

Your car should work now. I have tested this on many vehicles and it works every time. The most common mistake every dealer makes is when selecting the year they select the year and model of the car they are sitting in, but as you have just read that is a complete no no. When buying your head unit just make sure you know the year of the car it came off of.

 

I will be testing this method out for myself. So far it is a WIN!
