Aftermarket XM / new head unit

Emporer, you'll probably answer....thank you

i've done some searching and i have not seen this answered before (not even on avic4 1 1.com) i am putting in an after market head unit, with the XM box to go along (pioneer avh-4200dvd and GEX-P920XM).

does anyone know if i can keep the stock XM antenna or even if (slight to no chance) the stock XM box will work?

if i can keep the stock antenna, is there an extension i need? where is it located (i think on the rear deck)

any help would be greatly appreciated

btw: the head unit and everything should be here by June 18th. Install with a friend around July 4th weekend (+ or - 1 week)

Emp, if your in town, could use the help (im in So Cal)

I do not believe you can use the stock XM tuner, but I think I saw a post in the "How TO Guide" section on utilizing the factory XM antenna.
I think this is it. https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/show...hlight=antenna

Also found this, don't know if it is what you will need but just incase.

don't know why i missed that How to....

no offense to the how to post, but the pics and methods weren't really working for me. why not pull up the rear deck instead of sliding a hand in? better pics would happen too.

still not sure what the stock antenna looks like, where its routed from the roof, and part numbers for extension.

can any one else chime in

thanks

I agree about sliding your hand in, it is a very tight space.I have also seen how to's showing the placement of the XM tuner.
When I put my rear speaker in I took my rear deck out, the XM tuner is in the center all the way at the back under the top deck on the metal in between the rear speakers, it has it's own power wires and the antenna is plugged into it on the side, the antenna cable runs along the pass side under deck up the side to the roof, the antenna(small black box) is centered on the roof above the rear window. I beleive if you have onstar that the XM antenna in part of the onstar antenna? not sure.

you can use the stock antenna. its located under the rear lid. its just basically clipped in there. its easy. the hardest part is putting the rear lid back on cause you kinda have to bend it.

thanks for some input. obviously, the stock antenna wont reach to the front head unit of the car, and i'm guessing that the aftermarket unit will not have the longest cord to bring the new box back the entire length of the car where the stock one goes, so i'm guessing i'll still need to get some kind of adapter to connect the stock to the aftermarket antenna

i just recently downloaded the install guide to the XM radio box.

your RIGHT Emp, there is a 19ft. cord from the box to the radio, so i will probably instal the new box in the stock location. the only thing i need is an antenna adapter to use the one on the roof. where does the actual wiring for the stock box lead to the head unit. i've never removed seat/interior other than the door panels. what's the easiest way?

as for the adapter, i think i might go with something like this

Thanks comptekkie for the link. it was helpful. one ? regarding that, will a 9ft adapter cord ruin my signal? i really would need like 2", seeing as the antenna is right there
