now lets take two round subs one 18 and two 12s because your trying to say that
[qoute]Besides, you would still be moving more mass with just one 18" round sub than two 12" round subs, and that's how you obtain higher SPL.[/qoute]

For this i will take a Memphis lvs18x3 18" sub which cost 1800 with an rms of 1000 and has a 15 in diameter will displace 176.7 in(squared) and has a max excursion of .61in will only displace 107.8in (cubed).

I thought i put in w6 if i didnt im sorry To clarify if i made amistake all my stuff is based on the jl audio w6v2d4. on a side note the w7 is made in a 8" 10" 12" and 13"

Also the response is a little low becuase of the huge amount of surface space.

Now a 2 jl w6v2 12s will cost you 1000 roughly 800 rms with a diameter of 9.95 per sub will put out 101 in(cubed) of volume displacement with a max excersion of .65 and a surface diameter of 155.6 inchs squared. Now lets take one sub and find out the surface area of that shall we? Thats 77.8in now because you have a lower surface area your going to have a faster response. times that by two and you will get more space being moved at a faster rate then that 18in SQUARE sub will do.

This is a comparison mainly for the VOLUME DISPLACEMENT.

Now back for to the fun My sub
will put out
6000rms
has a diameter of 18ins
surface area of 254.5 inchs squared
xmax of 2.4 in and will displace 610.7 inchs (cubed)
WOW. Your calculations are way off.

If, in fact, the 18" square sub has a surface area of 16.77" (as you say it does), then 16.77" x 16.77" = 281.2329 square inches, not 221.

Then multiplying that by the 3rd dimension (.22) would equal 61.871238 cubic inches.

But, according to the Kicker website, that particular sub has an Xmax of 24.88 mm, which equals .9622" and would put the volume at 269.983584 cubic inches.

I'm not even going to try to correct the rest because it doesn't matter. This response time you speak so highly of is meaningless when it comes to SPL. In order for a speaker to produce a 60 Hz frequency, it has to move 60 times, for and aft, per second. It doesn't matter if it's an 8" speaker or a 22" speaker. It still has to move that fast. The wattage is what determines how far the speaker moves, for and aft, and increases the intensity of the sound (aka SPL). Max excursion is how far the speaker will move before reaching its mechanical limits. It has nothing to do with "response time". It only limits how much said woofer can move before it tries to jump out of its own basket. If you'd like to improve the "response time" of any sub, put it in a smaller box. That alone will raise the Q of the speaker.

The fact is that this particular 18" sub (whether round or square) will displace more air than two JL Audio 12" subs that you're referring to, which I believe is what you had originally stated was not true.

Here you go buddy this is the site i use for refrence

http://www.mtx.com/Flash2/volume_displacement.cfm

you have to use the right hand side because the left is for mtx only

in my unprofessional opinion the only thing i see wrong with his 18 is the box seems way undersized. i bet it knocks like nobody's business though! i've had 18's before and i prefer my 12's but hey to each their own and the solobarics kick ass!! my only suggestion would be to move the amp to the back of the box and to check to make sure it's the right size. for that sub if you have a sealed box the size should be...

6 cu.ft., Fb= 51.3Hz
F3= 24.6Hz, Pmax= 2800W

if it's a vented box it should be...

5 cu.ft. Port: 60sq.in. x 14.5”
Fb= 35Hz, Pmax= 5000W
( with 25hZ subsonic filter)

if the box is not the right size it will result in a shortened life span for the woofer.

lol my bad sounded like you had the 301... anyway thats a nice amp. i got the same one just grey

Ahh I was mistaken. It is the 15 that they don't make in the w7. I knew that there was a normal size that they didn't make and they made a 13 in its place. I don't look much at JL. I don't really like their subs, and I think they are over priced and over rated. The JL amps are very nice though.

I am not trying to argue with people here I am just trying to back up the original poster since every one else seemed to jump him right when the thread was made. I know there are a ton of members of this forum but there is no need to chace new people with pitch forks and torches calling them a liar because they want to show off something they are proud of.

okay i took it the wrong way...I thought you were boasting. And dude im sorry but i would definitely not be jealous of your setup lol. If I wanted to I could also do it but I would never go that route.. It's just so rediculous lol. I mean c'mon, and 18inch sub running 4400 rms is just way overdoing it to me. Hey to each its own.

I believe the JL's are made to work with sealed enclosures. when i had my W-6's i was told to use a sealed enclosure by the dealer because they were designed that way. i always likes the sealed enclosures better anyway i always thought the sound was alot cleaner. and as far as the sound being crisp i would just have to say that you get what you pay for. if you go and buy audiobahn or sony speakers don't expect them to sound like the speakers the pro's use. i would stick with kicker, JL, memphis, concept, MTX, Alpine, or rockford fosgate and you'll be good to go!

I'll stick with my stock system, no need for flashy 18" subs when less would be more for quality.

Edited for flaming.

I give my opinion, thus the FORUM CONCEPT. And seriously, do you really need an 18" sub? Its fast and the furious style now, all show.

JonyyB sorry, i'll edit my post. I'm not FLAMING though, i'm simply expressing my opinion on his setup that hes bragging about. I'm also not the only one in the thread that was "flaming"

One 18" will not give you great sound quality and is more of flashy show. You would be much better suited with 2 twelves as stated previously. Sorry for any FLAMING.

I know you are trying to defend yourself, but don’t cross the line in doing so. Take it to PM’s if you 2 have issues. Plus, he apologized for his post, so it’s only appropriate you apologize as well. Keep the forums clean!
