broke my sub?
broke my sub?
I have a rockford fosgate sub and amp in my trunk, the amp is rated at 600rms with 1000max i believe. The sub is 12" and rated at 500rms with 1000max. I was cruising back to college on the highway blasting music and my sub cut off. My trunk was full of **** i was moving. The sub is not blown, the cone looks great. Wiring is all fine, the amp is getting signal because it still beats to the music. The sub makes no sound at all. What did i break? Think i need a new sub?
I have done this before.
You blew the sub
Push on the sub, it will either be really tight, like you could stand on it and it wouldn't move or it will be really loose and you hear whats left of the voice coil rubbing around in there.

get a ohmeter and ohm it. if it says OL its smoked, if it says a number your good
Example: You have a 4 ohm sub and the meter sends you back 2.9. Thats a blown speaker.
IMO-Even if iyou hook the multi meter up to it and it comes back 3.9, thats already the begining stages of being blown, its all down hill from there.
If the sub just stop working and the amp is still getting power, no protection lights and does not smell like a resistor or something fried. Then the sub is blown.
Not if that number is less than the amount the sub should be running at.

i agree its prolly got problems, but without it in front of me who knows.
actually the 4 ohm rating is nominal. Since copper/ aluminum isnt really 100% perfect no sub will read its nominal rating but they usually get close.
What kind of amp do you have 5 channel? Try popping the sub with a 9v battery and see if it moves.

yup... i bet ur sub seized up on u... it happened to me last week i have 2 rockford 10" P3's and i only had a 200 watt amp.... and the subs were under powered and the one seized up on me... so its fucked... but mine looked messed... the cone bubbled out and it was making a really weird hollow sound when there was bass... but now i can go get a new system lol

Thats what it was when I did mine in, both of them. Just ran more power into the subs then they were willing to handle. One of them was a 12" JBL that you could hear the voice coil had come apart. when I pushed on it after it sounded like nails on a chalk board. I'm sure its a mess in there, just never wanted too look
