I sincerely doubt they thought it out enough to place the battery at the right rear to counteract the weight of a driver. It is a Cobalt people, seriously.

Whether they thought about putting it there or not, its location DOES counter driver weight.

It wouldn't surprise me if they DID put it there purposely anyway, given that they wanted the SS/SC to be a force in SCCA/NASA/GAC racing. First mod most serious racers do is relocate the battery from the engine bay to the right rear of the trunk to take weight off the front of the car AND counter driver weight. Every little bit helps. Besides, the stock crossweight on the SS/SC with 150 lbs driver is really damn close to a perfect 50/50. Not something I want to throw off. People with a really good coilover system in place aren't going to care as much because a little tweaking and they can cornerweight the car to make up for it.
