Check charging system

hey guys i just got done replacing clutch and the clutch is in and car drives good....but do have one question......i have a check charging system on the info board......question.....why? as far as i remember it wasnt on before the clutch swap.......soooooooooo question is there something i could have done? i mean i was clear on other end of motor no where near the alternator......but i did unhook wires from starter and pull starter....could i have missed a wire i hooked up two wires back on starter... the little one for ignition and bigger one that went to fuse block under hood....

i also took the two wires off the the fuse block...the two bigger ones so i could move the block easier...but there back on...................hmmmmmmmmmoh and we hoooked up a meter on battery...when under load it drops a little....while running it shows its not charging.....so im guessing either alternator is bad or something wrong with wire

You probably didn't get one of the wires plugged back in or bolted down properly. The charging wire from the alternator goes to the starter with that big wire going back up to the fuse box IIRC, check that. Also make sure all your contacts are clean where you took the wires off and put them back, a little corrosion can stop it from making contact and cause that problem.

Or it's just a painful coincidence that your alternator took a crap at the same time, but i'd bet against that.

Check that you have power at both terminals on the alternator, and whichever one doesn't you can track down your charging issue at the other end of that wire.

I wanna say there is the one small one and where the larger one is, there should also be a wire coming from the alternator to the same stud. I haven't done one in a bit though so I could be mistaken.

Look at the single wire coming off the alternator, not the plug but the one with a nut attaching it, where does it go now?

On the output stud on the alternator itself. Might be very difficult to access on this car.

Common among many cobalts.

Try cleaning your throttle body first.

Also if you want to check the charging system you can do one of two things.

Use a multimeter on the battery. 12volts when not running, upwards of 14volts when running shows alternator is charging battery.
The second way I use is to use a scan tool like a DashHawk, Interceptor, or now I use bluetooth adapter and Torque app on my phone. Use these to read the voltage output of the battery.
