Do I need a new head unit?

Hey guys, I want to get two subs and an amp installed, and I was wondering if I needed a new headunit or not... at Best Buy the tech told me that with Chevy head units, you can't get the right oomph unless you install an aftermarket head unit, but an independent place told me they'd never heard that before... what do you guys think?

U need a line out converter. I did it that way before i got my new head unit. They're maybe $20 or so at best buy. Just splice into the stock subwoofer wires. It's fairly simple and works pretty well.
