DVD/Nav Head Unit

Hey guys I did a little searching and found nothing. Has anyone installed a single DIN DVD/Nav system that they had to modify the back plate inside the stereo well? My Dual 8190 system is too long and won't fit. I looked it up on crutchfield and it says I have to modify (cut) the plate back there. Has anyone done this and if so what is the best way to go about this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
