Factory installed remote starter

Does anyone know if GM installs remote starters on manual transmission cars. I have a feeling they do not cause of liability.

aftermarket can go 1 mile plus on some

Ok, this may be a dumb question but how does a remote starter work on a manual? Do you just keep it in neutral when it's parked so it will start or what?

Why in the hell would you need a range of 1 mile?, my factory one goes about 250 ft.

it works with a series of safety switches. I am not to fond of going aftermarket as i don't want to have 2 remores on my key chain

I am not suggesting you install an aftermarket remote start on an alarm, but there are ones that dont require a second remote.

i was wondering about this too. sum kinda answered it about the switches but you just leave it in neutral then? not that im worried about the e-brake not holding it or anything im just curious.

ok, there are no switches that are installed... its all in the programing in the brain box of the alarm/remotestarter. Like on mine, i have a compustar pro, and when i want to remote start the car i need to do a sequence of put in netural, press foot on brake, pull e brake, turn key off, get out close door, and then the car shuts off and your ready to remote start.
The reason you could use a mile range, is with a 2 way paging system. so if you have $$$ in the trunk and someone is messing with your car it will let you know.

This sounds pretty complicated for just having a remote start. Is it just that it's in writing that its complicated or is it kind of an annoyance. Do you get used to it really quick and is it something that just becomes second nature to you?

@bluecobalt99 - I just got a 3500R NuStart unit put in from BestBuy, which is essentially a CompuStar (very good brand). It has 3000' of range, un-lock/lock doors and arm/disarm alarm, pop trunk, remote start, temp sensor, etc. Got it installed for $350 Canadian. It's a really sweet setup and with the arm/disarm I only need 1 remote, not 2 on my keychain.

I wouldn't get anything other than a 2-way with decent range... that way you can start it from school to your parking spot, or from the movie theater just before you leave... etc. So I at whoever said 250' was plenty!

and like Cefaln452 said... with good range and a 2-way, your remote will tell you if someone attempts to open your door or bumps your car or anything like that from a mile away!

Also, how much does a good remote start cost? Besides the $350 canadian for installation, how much does a good unit cost?

Depends on what you want it to do. A simple 1-way starter only installed you could probably get for like $100usd. A decent 2-way with good range starter only you are looking at like $300ish for the unit plus install.

Yeah, that another thing... you can get some systems with AUX inputs/outputs and control things like windows or air ride with your remote. My brother can slam or raise his truck with his Compustar system by pressing a few buttons... pretty slick.

Sorry wrong about the switches. My civic has one and what I have to do it put the car in neutral, lift hand brake, press autostart button, exit vehicule. press autostart button (car shuts down) and then lock the doors.

The only thing that sucks is that if you reenter the vehicule you have to reset the autostart or it will not work the next time

Very easy... i do it sometimes when i dont even want remote start... its basiclly your standerd procedure when you park your car

Glad someone agrees... Having alot range may not seem like you need it but untill the day you do you will love it... My 2 out of 7 auxs are being used... led turn on, and reardefrost.
