Factory Speaker Replacement

I have an 06 Cobalt SS 2.4

Everything is still factory except the head unit

My speakers are starting to go bad, so i was looking to replace them

I was told by Best Buy that if they replace the factory speakers the amp and sub won't work because the new speakers can't handle them

How can i change my speakers and keep my sub without spending a ton of $$$

well best buy sucks or you were misunderstood. If you remove the stock amp the sub wont work. best buy was probably thinking about that due to the fact the stock speakers are 2 ohm and the replacements they would surely sell you would be 4 ohm. 4 ohm speakers would be a bad idea on the stock amp so to use them you would need to wire to the HU directly by either running all new wires thru the car or doing an amp bypass at the amp.

**** im rambling on with **** that im sure you have no idea wtf...

You can do what you want easily by:

1. buying 2 ohm speakers. you would just swap the speakers out leaving the wiring the same amp and sub the same everything works no problem

2. using 4 ohm speakers you would want to run wiring from the HU to each speaker directly or run wiring from the HU to the speaker wires at the amp and at the HU hook up both the new speaker wires and stock speaker wires so both the sub and new speakers will work (that should be detailed enough for an installer to figure out but i didnt include everything so i dont type a paragraph)

That's what I plan on doing. Just got to find some decent 2 ohm speakers. I read that the stock Pioneer subwoofer gets its power from the back speakers. If I wanted to replace the subwoofer and hook it up to an aftermarket amp what wires would I have to switch around?

1. go to crutchfield.com
2. enter your model
3. pick speakers of your choice...

they usually have very good sales and are top notch quality

couldnt you just replace the factory speaker amp? that is if you plan on bypassing it for aftermarket sub

that way you can run 4ohm speakers and such via stock wiring?

what do you mean. you can just replace the stock amp to run 4 ohm speakers but you would need to run wiring from that amp to the stock amp area in the dash.

the sub and the speakers should be thought of separately. unless your getting a 5 channel amp which most dont you dont have to touch the speakers to run an aftermarket sub/amp. And if you run a 4 channel and do an amp bypass you can still use the stock sub as is.

i have zero idea where the stock amp is, but i know its under the seat is some cars, so i figured you could simply take out factory amp, replace with aftermarket and use its connections

no its under the dash. even if it was under the seat you would have to run power but otherwise that's plausible.

okay i get it now, i mean upgrading it wouldnt be a bad idea, and mounting it under the pass seat not a bad idea... running wires isnt hard either... ALTHOUGH with the battery in the trunk, you dont have the same option to split off a power wire for it en route to the trunk for subwoofer amp -_- hah

on this note, do you know what amp the stock SS turbo alt puts out?
