Hardwiring GPS

Does anyone have any experience with this? Well, I cant really hardwire it, I'm using the Garmin Nuvi 680, and it uses the AC plug as an antenna for the MSN Direct service. I wanted to lengthen the wire, so I can mount it higher on my windshield without having the cord dangle down. Any thoughts?

Splice into and extend the wire, then run it where the winshield meets the dash, use something PLASTIC to wedge it in there, down the side and up under the dash, then just splice into one of the 12v plugs, I did this with my radar detector, same thing though
