How to use USB input on radio besides iPod.

Ok so i wasnt sure to post this in the electronics section, or the 08-09 section and I did it here becauase from what i understand the 07's and such dont have this, and its standard on 09 SS'.

Ive had ipods hooked up my radio and it works pretty cool using the usb with the integreated controls and the charging and all that.

But I went to use a flash drive (i actually dont own an ipod GASP!) and it said **** about the format. Now im pretty handy with computers being A+ certified and what not, so im not a complete ass. What formatting or file typing does it have to be in for a USB flash drive to work, or will it.

As it was I think the Drive was formatted to a FAT32 pretty standard format, what does the stereo accept? Or is there a certain way i have to put them on the Drive / Can i have any thing else on it?

Much appreciated...

Well I don't remember the format. I thought it was FAT32, did you try NTFS or other.

The A+ certified made me chuckle.

The radio will not read the drive if it is not formatted. I formatted my flash drive in FAT32 and it works fine. Try formatting it in FAT and see what happens, what capacity is the drive?

What about a high capacity non-HD though?...

If somebody plugged in a 16+GB card in there... even 8GB, who thinks it'd read that? Has anybody tried it?

I have a 16gb flash, and it works fine. Just make sure you don't create alot of files.

That's right... you reminded me that I've heard of a files-per-folder limit.

Well we know it'll at least go up to 16GB then.

it should read any usb capable drive that can run fat32, ive heard of 256mb up past 320gb... it will probably only read a certain number of files though...i forgot that number but it was a crap load. You can only have x of folders and y number of songs per folder.

It reads my 4GB USB drive just fine. FAT32 is a good safe file system to use. Stick with ID3 v1 tags, some units flake out if you use ID3 v2 tags.

I'd be sure to remove any software that comes pre-installed with the flash drives. My 2gb came with software, which had to be manually removed, for it to work on other electronics, like my dvd player. FAT32 is a good choice also.

Does anybody know how the files are sorted on the drive? Or how to enforce a certain sorting method? My files are sorted in some random order, and it's annoying having to scroll through 30+ files all the way to 'A'.

im using a 16gb flash drive, and yes its formatted to fat32. I gotta sort thro it to see if there is any remnants of any original software on it, I might as well wipe it as i have everything thats on there somewhere else.

My last car had a 255 folder limit, with 255 files in each, i dunno why but 255 was the magic number.

I tried it with only like 30 songs on it, in regular mp3. the id tags are removed cuz my last car didnt like theat **** in it.. itunes can does it normally i believe, but anyway, id have to try it again.

Some just don't have it and nobody knows why.

Tofu, for instance, has a car that was made the same month as mine and his doesn't have it and mine does. He doesn't have the cd changer either, so I don't know what's up in his case.

They're going to be hard to get pretty soon as they start parts-bin-ing stuff for the Cobalts. I've already heard that the black version of the radio will soon be the only kind available.

On that note, if anybody has a hookup for a USB radio for a good price, I'm betting Tofu would gladly take it off your hands. I know he's been really wanting one.

I was just saying that the older upper-end Cobalt radios had a CD changer. The later upper-end Cobalt radios had the USB instead (after all, who needs a CD changer when you can fit so much more on a flashdrive/harddrive?). I was trying to figure out what the deal was since his had neither.

A black-faced radio is what they're putting in the Cobalts now since that's all they got left. Personally, I don't like them as much as the silver color... esp with my interior color combo.

I'm not sure about the pinstripe. Many of our cars are black, so a black pinstripe would be pointless. Maybe that's why I haven't seen it, though I don't remember the other ones having them.

UUI (USB Option) was standard on 09.5 SS/TC's. Prior to that, 09s had UUI as a $100 option. Most dealers had no idea what the USB was for and they all claimed that the cars already have an aux jack. I pointed out that a 3.5mm stereo jack is the aux jack, good luck transmitting digital data through that antiquated analog port. My 07 Mustang GT has a stereo jack which I never use.
