Installing an alarm in an SS?

I bought a Viper 3002 alarm system the other day for a good price. I took my car over to (insert retailer name here) to have it installed on my '08 SS.

Long story short, after three hours of trying the tech said he couldn't/wouldn't do it. He was having trouble locating the correct wires to tap into. I forgot what he said in detail, but without that info, he didn't want to risk it. He said something about there being three white wires where he expected only one, and didn't feel comfortable risking a tap on a wrong wire since the others were likely data.

So, does anyone have any information I can go back to him with that can help?

Okay. Figured out the problem he was having. He could get everything installed except the door locks. The signal coming from the door-lock switch wasn't as simple as a + or - signal to lock or unlock, but rather was a digital signal.

Not likely, since I work at the store and get an employee discount.

Nope. Still hoping someone here can give me some information I can give to him so that he can interface the alarm with the door locks. That's all he needs to know to get it installed.

I was confused as to why he couldn't just tap the door lock switch (it's just a simple switch, isn't it?), but he told me that it's not that simple. He said the signal coming from the switches' wires was a data signal, not a simple electrical one. He installs a lot of alarms, but this was the first newer Cobalt he's done. He was perplexed because other newer GMs aren't so complicated.

Uhh no offense but your dude is a moron. If he knew how to operate a DMM it wouldn't be an issue.

Well the guy might be a moron but even a digital multi meter wont help him with this. The doorlocks wire on the cobalt is just that, a wire not 2 just one. It measures different resistance values for lock/unlock. Depending on how buddy is installing this there is two ways,

1-He is using relays and resistors to lock/unlock(old school way) or
2-He is using a data module which will take care of the resistance values via data(analog/digital signal)

Anyhow, if you would like I can send you the vehicle wiring information seeing that I own a mobile electronics shop and I have access to all that fun stuff. Just shoot me over a PM and we can figure out how to help your guy out!

Trying to avoid going with the data module option because that means spending more cash. My tech mentioned that it might be necessary (it is on Hummers and certain other GM cars), but again, this is the first 08+ Cobalt he's worked on. All the info he has access to is for older years which are a bit less complicated.

If going with the first method is not possible, what's your recommendation on an inexpensive module that'll do the job?

I'll gladly accept any info (schematics, diagrams, etc) that you can provide. I'd prefer to share as much of it as possible in this thread though since there doesn't seem to be many who are aware of this info, thus making us all morons.

Found a little bit of info in this thread: https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/electronics-audio-video-49/remote-start-questions-148431/

Seems that there's a 1500ohm resistor and a relay needed in order to tap into the power lock wire. Dunno what kind of relay is needed or how it needs to be wired in though.

Re-sent.

It's really very simple. Let me break it down to help out and tell me if this makes sense.

1. Yes you can use a DMM on a one wire lock setup.

2. You have a viper 3002 which should have come with a 451m relay pack. The brown black and white/black on that are not needed. The purple/black gets grounded as this is the signal that car sees to lock/unlock. Then on your blue/black wire you put a 1500ohm resistor in series. Then you take your blue/black and green/black and put both of them onto the white wire in the vehicle. Lastly there is a 3 pin plue with the 451m, you just plug that into your 3002 brain and boom your done.

Any questions just drop me a line.

That makes a lot of sense, actually. I'll go to ratshack and pick up a resistor then get back with my buddy at work and take another crack at it.

On a side-note just in case there's any issues, is there any trick to wiring in the trunk release?

Trunk release is as easy as it gets. The red/white wire from your brain gets hooked directly to the trunk release wire. No relays, resistors, or diodes required. You can grab your wire right at the switch or at the BCM

And my last question I think pertains to the Viper alarm itself. I understand the Viper has a method to automatically lock the doors after ignition, which is kinda redundant since the Cobalt already has that (triggered by speed rather than ingition). Is there an override for the Viper's auto-locking method?

Yes you can get around the ignition controlled locks. It is a programming feature that just needs to be turned off. You can find it in the installation manual.
