Nav deck installation

Hey guys, i just picked up a clarion nx501 for a good price last night.
now today im looking to install it and im trying to find the kit to hold it in there properly.
Everywhere ive looked has been saying i need this $200 wiring harness just so it will work, wihtout it, it wont even turn on!
Ive helped install a few decks in early 2000 model cars and never needed anything like that, just bought the $30 kit
but apparently to the one guy any car after 05-06 needs this new ****, this is the first ive heard of it and dont wanna buy something not needed.
If anyone knows what this actually is and if i need it or not let me know!

Oh and i drive an 06 ss with the pioneer system

Let's give this a try from my memory:

05-06 you can use a malibu (DO NOT quote me on that. Do a thread search or look in one of the stickies, I know I read it somewhere) but you need to source power for it I think. Again, just give a quick glance through.

Quick little note: You have to bypass the amplifier i believe for running it with a pioneer system. I have an LS so I never had to worry about it. Again, consult one of the stickies at the top for advice on that.

Dash Kit: I got mine through crutchfield. It was $13 or something shipped. Link below.

GM In-dash Receiver Kit For select 2005-up models, chassis size DD at Crutchfield.com

as far as anything else goes (i.e. bluetooth, satnav antenna) the panels are super easy to work with if you havent figured that out, and routing is simple. I installed an alpine w900 in my car in like two hours with every thing wired and all wires ran.

so i got it all installed
used the 20 dollar harnees rather then the 198 one
wired the amp wire to the pink wire on the harness that stays in the car
fuse tapped the accessory 12v power, into the sunroof fuse since it is only used when opening the sunroof and shuts off when you turn off the car
Everything works great! dont get scammed into the expensive one unless you want it completely clean

aibrecht..im actually in the same boat you were,i just bought a pioneer avix x910bt and some dudes have been telling me they will charge me 200 for the install because of this expensive harness i need so my door chimes and steering controls will work,i also have a 2006 cobalt ss with the pioneer system, i know how to install stereos so if i can just use a regular harness i will do it myself instead of paying hundreds for the installation, did your steering controls still work?

lol...door chimes are retained regardless on an 06. If you want the steering wheel controls get a PAC module offline. nowhere near $200....
