Got an 05 cobalt manual everything. Installed a Sony Xplod headunit, 2 Kicker CVR 10s, 2 polk audio db961 6x9s, two polk audio db691 6.5s, a MTX ThuderElite 1501D mono amplifier to push the subs (true 1400w), and a Kicker zx350.1 4 channel amp (462w on the birth sheet provided by kicker), also i have a Kinetik HC2000 power cell all this is hooked up to.

The headunit can go to 50 max volume but my amps go into protect at about 30 volume. This is with everything tuned perfectly, no distortion at all (that i can hear). In my old jeep grand cherokee laredo 4.7l v8 i could go all the way to 50 without the amp (sony xplod 1000w max, around 450 true) protecting. However i have upgraded to bigger better subs, speakers, and a beefier amp since those days too.

I want to hear some opinions on what i should do to address and maybe fix this problem. Someone told me do the Big Three which ill be doing in the next few weeks. Someone else said it could be because the cobalts came with low amperage alternators. I really dont want to have to spend 600-700 dollars on a bigger upgraded alternator if this one can handle it.

Everything is grounded nicely in the trunk, no paint blocking the ground points. All 0 gauge wire is used in all the hookups.

I just feel like the cobalt can handle more than 1800 true watts.

And one last question. What are some better speakers than the polks to run my amplifier to? One of my 6x9s blew when i was adjusting the gain on my amp trying to figure this all out, and the gain really wasnt even that high.

what goes into protect? and be careful not to blow that amp.

 

It was both amps. The protect lights would flicker every time the bass hit.

Check all my speaker connections. The rear passenger side speaker in the deck had disconnected. Hooked it back to the speaker and now none of it protects at all.

I guess maybe the broken connection was causing a short somewhere in the electrical circuit?

 

ya probably if it was touching the metal somewhere.

 

It wasnt touching anything. Just the wire hanging there in midair. Im not sure what wouldve caused it

 

but when u play ur music at mid or louder volume would your subs be able to move it to touch the metal?
