Picked up an RPD

So I was browsing around on ebay and found someone selling an RPD unit by itself for really cheap. I don't think the wrecking yard knew what it was because it was listed as a boost gauge. It appears the knob on the front is missing but I will figure something out.

Now the challenge will be making it work in my sedan.

The wiring I am not concerned with it's where to mount the thing.

I have absolutely zero fabrication skills when it comes to plastic. I know some have taken the coupe pillar and Frankensteined it with the sedan pillar with great results. Maybe I'll gather the two pieces and try to find a place that can do it for me.

The other thought I had was to gut the unit and mount the display somewhere else in the dash.

Welp, once I have it in and and verify it works I will try to come up with a nice mounting solution.

I believe they make a pillar to mount the rpd in. Just a matter of getting one

No pillar's for the sedans at all. I did see the RPD coupe one.

I bet I'll have to buy that one, pick up a spare sedan one and try to find someone that can do magic with the two.

I certainly do not have the skills to do that.

I do have the skills to wire it in properly though.

I realize this includes a boost gauge and probably has a bunch of stuff I'll hardly use but if the AFR has a high enough refresh rate then that will be where it sits most of the time.

The other appealing thing for me is the coolant temp display. I prefer to leave my DIC on either TripA or DTE.

Cannot beat it for $44.77!

YES I know it's missing the knob.

wonder if you could take the mount that's in the hhr and put in on the dash somewhere? would still require a lil fab work to look clean though.

I also put together an email to ortiz custom pods. They build some really killer pods if you're patient. They build them from OEM parts.

Hopefully they'll agree to do it for me.

Yeah I like what they are doing. This would be me second purchase from them if they agree to do it. In order right now is a dual cluster pod for my car. Apparently they are roughly a month out.

Id do this for you but i dont have a sedan to mach it up in. If the person building it doesnt have a sedan i would not let them build pods for you. The steering bezels arent an issue but a pillars flex and you need to right angle and to make sure any work you do clears the air bag.

What do you mean by the pillars flex and you need to right angle?

I am a-ok with one that I may have to do slight adjustments for 100% proper fit.

I understand clearing the airbag but the airbag module isn't in the pillar. Part of the curtain is but it's just in the very upper most portion of the pillar. The bottom 1/2 does't have much.

I will pull my pillar covers and double check when I get home.

To build pods the right way they ahould be done in the car. The a pillars can flex especially if your cutting away from it. Normally i will put it in the car and adhere it so it retains its shape. You want to make sure the angle is just right as well for the driver. Not put in funny. Also it needs to clear the hood around thd cluster.

The air bag curtain is in the pillar and fits rather tightly in there. I know the module is not in there. But the bag still fits tight. Anyone who has my pods and knows my work knows what they get. Im not cheap and theres a reason.

I dont just glue a universal pod or a piece on top and slap a bunch of body filler on it sand it paint it and send it on its way. I try to make everything look flush and like it was never cut up. A lot of guys have the buldge from just putting it on top and building up filler u til they have a smooth transition. You get what you pay for always in the end.

I agree you generally get what you pay for.

We'll see what happens. The reviews of their custom pods is great. The lead time is over a month after payment.

I don't have many options. I get what you're saying but I cannot fabricate something like this and do not know anyone who can.

I have to imagine they are capable of making some kind of temporary jig to keep things aligned. If they're cutting the bottom of one and bonding it to the top of the other hopefully it's not too complicated for them.

I'll keep this thread updated with how things go.

I did find a guy on our local Cobalt board who is interested in building one for me.

I do have the ZZP piece in hand and can pull the donor piece out of my sedan at any time.

We're trying to meet up depending on our local weather so he can get started.

Thanks!
