Question regarding ohms...

This may be an obvious question or maybe it isn't...I have an alpine Mrp-M500 amp which can run at either 4 ohms: 300W x 1 (0.08% THD) or 2 ohms: 500W x 1. I bought a secondhand alpine type r in a vented enclosure and basically unplugged my old infiniti sub and plugged the alpine right up and it sounds pretty good but basically what I don't understand is whether it is getting the full 500 watts, being wired at 2 ohms or the 300watts at 4 ohms. Somebody else did the install for me with the previous sub and amp so I have no idea how it's set up. I know my previous sub was a 4 ohm DVC that ran at 250rms if that can clue you guys in on anything. I apoligize for the wall of text but I'd be grateful for some insight from any of you audio gurus...I want to make sure that type r is getting all of those 500watts.

unplug the high level outputs of the amplifier (the wires going from the amp to the vented enclosure) from the terminal cup (assuming it wasn't done hoodrat style with wires running to the sub through a hole in the box). after you do that, take a multimeter, set it on resistance (Ω), probe the negative and positive terminals of the subwoofer enclosure and see if you're getting anywhere from 1.5-2.3. If you are, you're getting all you can out of that amplifier safely. Now if you have two separate terminal cups, make sure that you probe both, and are getting anywhere from 3.5-4.3 ish from each subwoofer's terminal cup on the box.

Either way you could hook up 4 x MRP-500's to it and not blow it up..

Dont think it matters to much if your under powering it, at any particular load. Itil sound good still, just not loud.

Let me google that for you

no matter what you do you will never get the full power out of an amp. you will probly get maybe 400watts out of it at best. Your MOSFETs in the amp can not take that 500watts of power for very long and will burn up very fast.

not sure how u figured out his impedance. considering he said he had a dvc 4 running 250w off that amp (impossible) and nothing about if the new sub is dvc 2 or 4.

Mind you running 2 subs that are diff in diff boxes is sorta ghetto but if its wired properly then thats your choice if you like it or not. if its wired improperly and you blow either the subs or the amp or both then well shouldn't have done it

He could have had the dvc 4 wired at 8...which wouldn't get 250.....but something to the likes of 175/150ish could be possible....

I was just telling him how to figure out if he was wired at 2 ohms or not, which, in turn would give as much as the amp could safely. DVC 2's in series on each sub and out to a terminal cup 4 ohms @ each cup (which would go down to two at the amp)....or the subs were once again in series, but wired together at the cup, once again giving 2 ohms....Basically telling him if he's getting 2 ohms, he's getting what he wants out of the amp. And yea i agree, two boxes is another hoodrat special in my books.
