Radar detector help

Ok, I have a seriously annoying issue with this detector. It's a Cobra ESD737 model. My g/f has an ESD7000 which from what I can tell(packaging and general appearance) are the exact same model just with a different number on it. Anyway, tried both models in my car and here's the issue:

All gears except for 1st, anything past half throttle over 2k rpms causes the Laser portion to be set off until I come out of the throttle. As the car warms up (inside and engine) it gets more and more touchy. I'm also noticing now that if I slowly push into the throttle and don't go into boost, it wont go off either. Anybody have any idea what this is? I've e-mailed Cobra about it and they won't warranty it out or give me any help whatsoever. Their suggestions were to
1. hardwire it somewhere
2. install a noise filter
3. Buy a more pricey model as the inside components are usually different.

I've tried plugging it into both 12v sockets in the car and nothing changes. I really don't wanna deal with hardwiring it and really don't wanna buy a new one.

try moving it as far away from the dash as you can to see if that fixes it..just want to know if its related to the power or it interfering with electronics in the dash.

I'll give it a shot, but I haven't got high hopes. I don't see what would be causing the laser alarm to go off tho...that's a pretty specific little bugger. I'd be less surprised if it were the X or K bands. And...why would it only go off w/ anything past half throttle while i'm pulling boost? It just doesn't make sense to me

It's a piece of ****... Sorry to be harsh about it, but it's the truth if you ask me.

I have the Escort Passport 8500 X50, and that it WONDERFUL! The Laser never trips, unless, I'm getting lasered.

But to answer your question... It's evidently making a false reading, do you really want it???? But I say try moving it and see what happens...

ESD-737 and the ESD-7000 are the EXACT same units. Same PCB, same Ocellators, case...etc. The only difference is where they were sold. The ESD-737 tends to be the Walmart one.

Anyways, I've seen the 737 in action, and let me tell you, you cannot rely on it. It does not have the range to give you advanced warning if you speed. Also, Cobras (Or more accurately: "Crapra") leak quite a bit of frequency, which will **** off every owner of a good RD near you.

Anyhow, there should be no reason your car is setting the detector off. It is always better to hardwire the unit, but I think your primary issue is that you're running the $50.00 Walmart special that is much better served as a paper weight.

If you have the money, the Valentine1 is the best out there. It tells you the number of sources, the direction of the sources, and is fully programmable. It also has the best sensitivity of any detector on the market. You can get one for 350 if you call Valentine Research directly and ask for a refurb/returned unit (A large number of people usually get one for a major trip, then return it after coming back. The unit is fine).

Others that are also quite decent are the Escort 8500 X50, the Passport 9500i, and the Beltronics STi Driver. Anything by Cobra and RMR (Rocky Mountain Radar) are junk... don't get them. Also avoid low end Whistler units from Walmart.

If you cannot afford one of the good units, you cannot afford to speed, period. A traffic ticket in most states is $250-350 after the fines, court costs, and fees... and that is not including insurance increases and traffic school.

Whatever you get, mount it high and mount it completely level. Cops don't run radar from underground or up in the sky.

You bought junk and it acts like junk. Mystery solved.

No surprise the company isn't helping. They're just out to push as many units as they can.

Look in to the Valentine 1. They've had the best service ever and mine never gets false alerts. (Only once in a blue moon around the airport laser goes off for a burst. Who knows what the **** DFW airport is doing.)
