Radio
While the circuitry in the radio itself is already set up for XM , your car is not wired for it . GM class 2 communications is rather complicated and it would be pretty damn costly to get the right wiring harness and antenna installed in your car .Class 2 communications in GM speak is Various systems in the car are tied together by a serial data line that commumicates with the various modules in the car like the Body control , pcm ect . Alot of pcm and module info , that have nothing to do with radio , travel thru it . XM if you had it , would have been intergrated into that huge bundled interior harness .
Aftermarket XM , or Cirrius ( better than XM imo ) is about the only logical option ya got man . Unless ya wanna spend ALOT of money and remove most of your interior to install .

The difference is $395
There are company that make harnesses to adapt XM to XM ready radios but they are kinda pricey (I have seen 75+ for the harness) and they are class 2 only and I am 99% sure the Cobalt radio is GM-LAN and not class 2 anymore.
At this point your probably looking at getting like the XD Roady add on or doing lots of research and figuring something out on your own.
i checked the manual and the XM digital receiever is GM Low speed LAN (not class 2) and it should be a unit located between the two rear speakers. If you have some wiring there and no unit maybe all you need is the unit and antenna.

Damm , I had no clue they changed . Does that mean the radio is powered by a switched 12 volt signal again ?
I just installed a Delphi in my friends car. It works great. Got it on Bestbuy website for $49 and they give you a $25 gift card.
