Sound help.

Im looking into my system options for the future here and i need some help with what I should use to get the sound I want. Im thinking I definatly want to get a componet speaker system and some high quality 6x9's in the back, or possibly a second componet set. I really enjoying hearing my music really loud and clear, and I like bass but I don't like to be overpowered by bass where you can barley hear the music like half my friends have. So what do you suggest for best sound quality but not too heavy on the bass?

edit: what I mean is, what size/brand, power sub would you suggest so the bass thumps and bumps, but It isn't a constant and extremely loud and annoying rumble.
Im planning on running all of my speakers on amps.

check out my signature. basically get a component setup for the front, the extra tweeters will be a great addition with a sub. get 3 way 6x9's, again for a little more top end. then make sure you get a decent amp that powers the speakers to the top end of their power range, and for ease, the amp should have a build in crossover so you can send just the high signal (anything over say 250hz) to the speakers. as for a sub, go with a single 12'' if you dont want over powering bass but you will still get a good punch out of it if you power it properly. again, always over power your speakers, not by a lot, but under powering them will damage the driver over a period of time. also get a nice head unit. if you are looking for great sound quality, get a dvd player, you will get a much cleaner sound.

power options:
speakers - should take about 50-70 a piece at 4 ohms
sub - somewhere between 400 and 750 watts will get you clean tight bass, i recommend a sealed enclosure. that will give you crisp bass, a ported enclosure will give you loud headache bass.

brands: i speak from experience, alpine is truly amazing. i've also worked with JL, Clarion, JBL, and MTX. you cant go wrong with any of those names.

Yeah, thanks for the great advice. definatly +1 rep for that.

Anyways, if I were to want to retain steering wheel control, what kind of harness would i need with, say, a alpine dvd player?

you just need an aditional harness which you can find here on crutchfield:

it depends on your specific stereo though, but you just put in your car specs into crutchfield and it will find the right one for you.

ya the pac modules work for pretty much every cd player out there but ive noticed some of the newer head units come "steering wheel control ready" so a device specific one may be offered as well as the "universal" pac unit

fyi drewski underpowering a speaker wont blow it... its the major clipping you can get from trying to overdrive the smaller amp (which you can do just as well or even better then the bigger one)

right, i didnt say that under powering will blow it, i just said it will damage the driver over time. speakers are rated to require so much power, and a lack of current can break down the internals. so thats why its best to get an amp at the top of the speakers power limits, therefore you wont need to overdrive it and risk clipping
