New guy and No ride

Hey all,

First of all let me start off by saying I'm a newbie when it comes to cars. But I do have a huge interest in them and I want to learn more, specifically with performance parts. I'm gettin a Cobalt SS at the end of the year and I am already thinking of what sick mods I can put on it. For the moment I am driving a 2000 Chevrolet C/K 2500 crew cab truck (255 hp comin at cha!)

Anyways, earlier today I was looking at this website called www.sportcompactonly.com and, while scanning through all the parts offered, I found various turbochargers, kits, and accessories--notably made by HKS. Being the newb I am I found this quite interesting because before that, I wasn't sure if you could put a turbocharger in a Cobalt. Can you put one in? I imagine if you can it must be a hassle installing it. It seems like with most American-made cars, they are supercharged, but most Japanese cars are turbocharged. And the Germans are bi and they constantly vary between the two. What gives?

With a small budget, would it be more wise to spend money on performance parts first or on exterior sexiness? This is actually kind of a stupid question seeing as how I don't even have a Cobalt yet but my excitement is like way above the ****-in-pants 6 year old level. I wanna get an idea of what you guys would do anyway. And yes, I do know that it is MY decision in the end.

I think a stock Cobalt SS looks pretty good by itself. I'm leaning toward getting my rims n stuff later, but man, it's a nice feeling showing off that "unique auto" look. A new, catback, dual-exhaust system with a growling/roaring tone would be cool. By the way, what's the usual cost for getting someone to install dual exhaust?

I'm just throwing out my thoughts here for the most part. I'd appreciate it if you guys could give me some feedback. I hope I posted this in the right place.
Thanks,

Havoc

You can turbocharge any car if you really want. Right now i believe the 2.2 is the only engine that cannot be turboed due to the tuning.

You can go looks or performance first, its your choice.

Dual exhaust, dont do it. You cannot do a true dual exhaust on any 4 cylinder. And if you wanted a dual exhaust you would have to split the pipe into a Y-Pipe after the rear axle and then attach two mufflers. Waste of time, no performance.

A couple of the guys on here have a dual cat-back setup. If thats what you want, I hope your going for strictly sound and looks rather than performance.

Then for the usual you can do intake, suspension, all that good stuff.

Cool, thx. I've seen a lot of pics of body kits for cobalts and they got dual exhaust so that kinda confused me. Like you said it's all looks and no performance. That helps out a lot cuz I surely would have wasted my money in doing that sometime later.

From what you are saying here it seems like you are confused by what you are looking for and what you want to get out of your car. I am going to assume that by speaking of the sc you are speaking of the ss. If you are on a limited budget I certainly would not suggest for you to be one of the pioneers that does a twincharge system. (or even turboing a 2.4 for that matter).

You have to ask yourself, do you want fast, a warrranty, riced, or what? If you are worried about warranty and price but also performance I would certainly finance a GM stage 2 kit with instillation at the time of purchase. All this can deffinitly be financed, just be persistant if they do not know what you are talking about.

If you are looking for appearance, just don't rice it please... (just my opinion) there are options out there. Like always, if you are on a budget (most of us are) don't just buy the cheapest to get it on quicker. Save, learn about what you are buying, you will not regret in in the end.

Hey... another NC guy... what town you in?
I live in Concord and go to school at Wingate University. Always good to see a Cobalt SS driver! I've only seen 2 or 3 of em cruisin around here. Hopefully you weren't that one I saw pulled over by the state dick the other week.

I certainly would not suggest for you to be one of the pioneers that does a twincharge system
Nah I definately wasn't seriously considering twincharging my Balt--I was just curious. Coincidentally, today I stumbled upon that giant thread by VictoryRed on his project. Yeah that thread pretty much says it all; I just hadn't seen it before I posted this--sry.
I also read that thread by tityrous where he got screwed by a GM dealer. There seems to be a lot of controversy with dealers installing and repairing vehicles with warranty. I'm not going to restart that thread here but let's just say I was educated quite well by that discussion.

Haven't been pulled in the SS/SC yet... thanking my lucky stars and everything else for that... bright red car with a large wing and loud exhaust in charlotte is just asking for trouble.

There's quite a few of us in the Charlotte area now... but with the winter coming on it looks like any big meet-ups may have to wait for spring.

Or that too

By the way, on that forum, in the FAQ section, there is a thread called "List of Websites". That's what I was talking about.

I've already got a warning ticket for my truck. I hope to god I don't get a ticket--not for the slightest infraction. If I do I'll be paying my insurance while in debt for the rest of my young life. You know how those bastard companies rape you with giant rates just for being 18. Oh well.
A friend of mine told me this rumor about things that a car's color is associated with--like red means you will most likely be pulled over by the cops and black means you are most likely to crash. Of course this isn't always the case but I thought it was kind of interesting.
A Springtime meet is fine with me. I'll probably have my car by new year's and maybe some mods by the end of winter.

By the way, on that forum, in the FAQ section, there is a thread called "List of Websites". That's what I was talking about.
Cool, thanks.

as far as I've ever heard... red cars are the most pulled by police... b/c they stick out the most...

following the same rule, yellow cars are probably second.

If you want to stand any chance of blending in... get a sliver one... I swear one out of every 3 cars is silver these days.

I remember reading once that occasionally some insurance companies will have a slightly higher premium for red cars, as the stats show them to be in more accidents.

BTW Don't make the mistake I did and buy the 2.4 SS. Order your own Supercharged cobalt to the point of where you can afford it and have all the stuff you want. And get blue, cops don't bother you and its a beautiful color.

Lol. Like a bull is attracted to red. I forgot what those guys who wave the red flags in front of the bulls are called...It'll probably come to my head as soon as I post this.

I dunno if I like blue. Maybe with other cars but I dunno about the cobalt. Silver isn't bad but tons of people got that color. Yellow and Red are cop-magnets. Black is hard to maintain. Orange is...well orange falls in with the same category as blue. White...is alright but I've been drivin this white truck for forever and I'm kinda tired of the color. That leaves me with....undecided..damn.
