DETROIT — Don't expect Chevrolet in the future to put the SS moniker on every model in the same way, says General Motors new Vice President of Global Engineering Mark Reuss.
Reuss told reporters Thursday that instead of smearing the SS across Chevrolets "like peanut butter," the "new" GM will carefully consider which models get the SS designation at all, which ones will get SS as just a trim level and which ones will get the full SS treatment.
He noted that throughout Chevrolet's history, SS has been used as a sporty trim package as well as on a full-blown model with a powerful engine and all of the accompaniments. But mixing the two strategies as GM did with the Cobalt was "a mistake," he said.
"We probably didn't do a very good job on the Cobalt SS," said Reuss, who headed GM's performance operations before taking over GM's Holden operations in Australia, just prior to his newest job. "We came out with probably the best sport compact tuner with the 265-horsepower Cobalt SS. That car was an amazing track car, it was fun to drive and it was very affordable."
But then GM also put the SS label on a Cobalt as a trim package but without the engine and other performance hardware.
"That was confusing — confusing to me and confusing to the customer," said Reuss. "It's like trainspotting, figuring out which SS has the 265-horsepower engine."

idk doesnt confuse me. ss= trim sc and tc have the ss trim stuff with higher horse power then plain ss trims. and the fact its LABELED on the car kinda makes you know like SUPERCHARGED and TURBOCHARGE clearly says i am not just an ss..
Oh I read that. Its true what hes saying. SS/NA was kinda a waste. They should made the SS sedans with a M62 as well as the SS coupe. NA shouldnt of had SS badges. Some people would say "I beat a SS Cobalt". No **** NA. SS should be for the supercharged/turbo/big liter engines. Not just sport seats and relocated shifters. Oh well, we shall see what the "New GM" has in store for us. That is all.
Yeah some kid in a talon kept telling me my car was slow and that he had beat one by 5 car lengths before. So i told him lets run them so he agreed, none the less he got spanked pretty bad prolly by 4/5 cars. he was cool tho he apolagized and i told him it was prolly a SS/NA then proceeded to tell him how GM was a bunch of idiots when they made that one.
Malibu SS and Silverado SS were a few that bothered me.
I was more comfortable with the Monte Carlo and Impala, but still didn't think they deserved the SS badge (especially the 3800 N/A MCSS). I don't think my Cobalt deserved it really.

The LSJ/LNF i think deserves the SS tag. I mean there powerful in there own class. There not ment to have 400hp out the door to compete with the SRT8's and such.
i have 2.4 SS and i always said it shouldve been an RS package, which was aloways an appearance package. and now they have the Cobalt LS 3. which is all the SS/NA trim with a 2.2 which is truly an RS car.

it confuses the average person tho. because your grand parents and ricers most likely won't know that a lip kit is highly likely to be a sc or tc

I wouldn't call it a mistake. But the meaning behind the "SS" emblem has certainly changed over the years.

Wow I hope this wasn't a direct quote bc first off that is sad that he doesnt know he cars that GM had produced lol and second hes talking about when the cobalt ss/sc and the cobalt ss/2.4 were both out in 2005-2007. He complimented the supercharged car as a amazing car that DESERVED the "SS" emblem and how the 2.4 was not up to par and was a different sub trim.
but idk.. i personally think you should know about the car you are going to buy BEFORE you go to purchase...

I hope GM comes out with a Cruze SS coupe. I like the mix of fuel economy and performance that my Cobalt provides. A RWD coupe (smaller and lighter than a Camaro) with a turbo 4 banger would be a good move IMO. A think a lot of potential buyers were turned off by the Cobalt SS's FWD platform. I like FWD for winter driving though.
