Post 10023: power steering recall**update**

What the dealership will do:

-replace the power steering motor

When will the recall be released?
-recall is being released in phases(aka not all at once), dealerships will be able to check for the recall based on the release AKA JUST BC YOUR VIN FALL WITHIN THE BREAKPOINT DOESN'T MEAN THEY WILL SEE IT RIGHT AWAY...BEING RELEASED IN PHASES

Vin breakpoint:

2005 cobalt
57156009 - 57673463

2006 cobalt
67600001 - 67887446

2007 cobalt
77100001 - 77417714

2008 cobalt
87100001 - 87331547

2009 cobalt
97100001 - 97299845

2010 cobalt
a7100003 - a718115

--------------------------------
2007 g5
77100002 - 77417707

2008 g5
87100006 - 87351546

2009 g5
97100018 - 97299842

2010 g5
a7100001 - a7116703
--------------------------------

2005 pursuit
57157648 - 5767361(i forgot a digit somewhere in this one )

2006 pursuit
67600030 - 67887269

Part availability:
-pre shipment week of 3/15
-remanufacturing process being established an will improve supply after june 12th

Process:
-connect tech2, check for DTC's
-record present DTCs on order submission
-clear DTCs
-remove motor
-install new assist motor
-perform test drive

Now most of those affected by the recall should recieve a preannouce letter, telling you that your vehicle is affected, and that the recall is being released in phases...once your phase come, you will recieve the actual recall letter...meaning you can have it repaired, or submit for reimbusement(form included w/letter)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

well folks, thats pretty much it, tried to sum it up best i could w/out confusing some, didnt post too many of the details, but thats the gist of it...i can try and answer q's, but i dont guarantee it, all the info i have posted is as recent as this morning...

I am still confused on this, my power steering went out before there was a recall, they replaced it.

Did they change the motor when the recall went out?

I need to know if I should take it back to get a new motor or something?

new motors were put into production late feburary, so prob not, they just replaced the motor with the same one, you should be able to submit for reimbursement once you get the recall letter(which has the reimbursement form with it)

I bought my cars in Utah. Now live in Virginia. How do I contact GM to make sure they send the letters to my new address?

Oh **** at first when I saw "- remove motor" I thought "no way in hell is the dealer removing my motor to replace a power steering.....oh right....motor" . Thanks for posting this up and I'll have to discuss the "test drive" portion with them, shop foreman, my buddy at the dealership or no body is taking it out .

Did you get a letter about the cadalic converter? They should send it to you if you have the car title. I bought my car in Pennsylvania, and they sent a letter to my house in IL.

I just called GM and my dealer. Both said my cars are not included in the recall. Both vehicles VINs fall into the breakdown the OP posted. However, they gave me case numbers. I was also able to update my address so that I can get the recall letters sent to my new address in Virginia. The number to GM is 1.800.222.1020.

update.

The GM Rep, after having me on hold for a few minutes to look at the Service Bulletin (I had to give her the number) has said that neither of my cars are involved in the recall even though my VINs are within the breakpoints. Apparently, not all vehicles in the breakpoints are included. As for the letters, they won't be issued until some time in April. I question the accuracy of the information the Rep had as I have one source telling me one thing, and another saying the opposite. If anybody can clear this up with certainty it would be greatly appreciated.

the system is not showing the recall until that w/e part of the pahse your in is released, until that day it will not show up...so if you fall within it, you are in the recall, but its not released for you phase yet...hope that make sense

it does. It helps out a lot. In summary, GM reps and dealerships won't know until the cars respective phase has approached. I guess I'll just wait for the letter(s).

To domin8

the rep u spoke with should or read a seperate document giving pretty cut and dry instructions on the situation. He prob looked at ur vin and saw it wasn't on there and didn't know what else to say...but if ur vin is in that breakpoint, ur in the recall...so just wai for the letter...also out of curiosity the rep u spoke with did he sound American?

Jn2,

Or anyone that knows. I have a service manual and it says that the steering column HAS to be removed from the car in order to replace the electric power steering motor. Is this TRUE ? If so this will be a major big deal repair. Chance for more damage ! Does anyone know for sure ? Thanks.

not true, u just have to remove the plastic cover under the dash, disconect the wires from the motor and it comes out with 2 little bolts. easy!!
