Anyone tried Synthetic Oil?
My Jetta 2.0T ran Mobil 1 0w-40. I'm planning on switching to Mobil 1 soon. The car has about 2,800 miles. My question, I've heard that you shouldn't use synthetic in the break-in period. Is this true? And if it is, when is the best mileage to switch?
When I count prep time (finding tools, towels, setting everything up, putting on clothes), changing the oil, and cleanup, it takes about 40 mins. But I'm not one to ruch things, and I give the car a good once over at the same time.

you should switch to synthetic on your first oil change idealy if you are going to switch...so ya, around 3k miles
You may want to go with a blend. the seals on your motor may not be properly maintained for synthetic so if you go straight synthetic now you chance a leak. Synthetic is good stuff but the molecular structur is much finer than dino edition. So if used from install it is better, but if used after a lot of miles it can find leaks from parts that did not get proper lube.
So this time out go with a blend then switch to full synthetic.

On my sedan, I just do it myself using Mobil 1 extended performance and change it every 15000 miles. I've never know anyone to change the filter between changes except for this guy below. If you get a quality filter to begin with you shouldn't have to anyways. The SS/SC come with Mobil 1. On our supercharged we change it every 10000 miles.

I have two things for you.
First, it is recommended that if you plan to switch to synthetic, do it within the first 15,000 miles. With the mileage you have on that engine, you would probably not be doing it any good, you would just be spending more money for the oil
Second, you can buy your own oil and filter, and then take that to a dealership and they will change the oil using your parts. That's what I do. I buy the stuff during a sale between changes, then the dealer only charges me $15 bucks for the change.
