Exclamation Breaking in the Cobalt!!!!!

I was wondering is it okay to break in the cobalts hard...or is it better to drive them normal 'til it gets so many miles on it before you run it hard??????

I have heard before from performance shops(but applying to upgraded parts or mods) and the dealerships that it is best to break in new cars hard so the computers can adjust to the levels of hp and register how the engine should run! Is this true with today's computer run vehicles?????

Just wondering so when I most likely buy a cobalt in a couple of months I know how to break her in

I didn't take mine over 3000 rpm's for the first 500 miles. I have done this on all 3 of my new cars and never had any engine problems. After the first 1000 miles is when I started getting close to the redline on my shifts.

Take your time for the first 500km as the clutch will need break in. Take your time shifting at different rpms while trying to stay below 5000rpm. Don't be afraid to get it up there once in a while just to let the ecu know it has a serious driver. Dont baby the car either is what im saying but dont go race it until you hit about 1000miles. Dont cruise at the same speed for too long and you should be fine. Dont try and be too careful doing it because that will probably arouse error and could be dangerous for you or your engine. Did I miss anything?

Thanks for the replies guys...what about auto vs. manual...does that make a difference in breaking it in time?

plus knowing me I will probably run it as soon as I get it, but won't take it to the track until I have 1000 or more miles on it >

break-in are to just get your rings/cam set for motors... we are not running solid rollers so the cam is taken out.. the motors are ran before the are place in the car so the rings have some seating already.. just drive it like you would everyday and everything will be fine.. as far as auto vs manual.. i dont see why either should have a difference (not an auto guy)

The dealer recommends no WOT starts and no constant cruidsing at one speed for the first 800kms or 500mi.

I never understood the don't cruise at one speed for long. Can anyone explain what that does? I have an 06 cobalt LS with 630 miles on it now, so I'm still being fairly nice to her, but sometimes that devil is on my shoulder when I see an open onramp.

Its not good for the seating of the seals in the engine. Basically its not staying at one speed thats bad, its staying at the same RPM for any extended period of time that they advise against.

So if you want to take the highway thats fine, just vary your speed, go between 4th and 5th hear, whatever you have to do

I belive the break in period for most cars is about 500 miles. Check your owners manual though to be sure, it should say the exact mileage when the break in period is over.

The engines from the factory are run for 15 hours before put into the cars, Then an oil change and insertion. There is no "break in time" for the engine itself. It is good to go.
