Breaking Point, need advise
i have had my fair share of failures on car parts concerning my SS but I keep replacing parts or fixing stuff. Just got to the point that I have had too many cars over the past years to keep modding them and selling them for a 5 thousand or more loss. Keep the balt, if the dealer doesnt come through replace it yourself.
Some cars made on the same line on the same day will be totally different. **** happens. I see it everyday as a ford tech. It really sucks, I know. I own an 04 redline, no column clunk, 190k Kms. My 09 ss turbo has 46k Kms and has the clunk. Luckily so far looks like no porous block. But I have a friend at gm who is a master tech to check it out every so often to look for signs that he sees everyday of common issues. Other than the column and links only problem is vibrations. Just as idle, came after my charge pipe/intercooler install. Doesn't make sense. Actually going to ask on this forum about it.
Anyways back to the topic. My redline is my winter beater now (lol). It has so many clunks from being lowered and beat on for ever. The important suspension parts are in good shape (ball joints, steering etc.) my control arm bushings are poops, but I'll deal for now. Front strut mounts, poop. Engine mounts soft as ... Well soft. Lots of issues, I'll deal later, don't want to upgrade it nemore. All money to ss. But when I get in my ss, I love every moment. Little clunks mean nothing comparing to my redline which has been torn apart a million times.
Basically fix it. All new cars and old have issues. It's part of owning a car. It sucks. U can deal with noises or track em down and fix

There are no vibe issues from the mounts. And downshifting is to be able to speed up easier if needed but it ALSO slows the car down, I live in the mountains so I barely come to stops and if I do I know well in advance. Gives me time to down shift and slow down with traffic while still staying in appropriate powerband ranges and really doesn't require much braking.
OP if you hate driving it so much just sell it buy something else that isn't a performance econobox model.
Use them, it will go away. When I first bought mine, brakes squealed like no other and made an interesting grinding noise. Checked the pads to make sure the grinding wasn't worn pads (it wasn't). Then went and did some hard breaking from 60-20 and one from 80 to 0. And now I usually throw at least one hard breaking a day (safely with no one behind me). Squealing and grinding noises are gone.

I don't hate the car, I HATE GM and their cheap, awful parts along with just as awful customer service, can't honor the fact that they made crap parts and warranty them. GM Tech at the dealership was like "yeah we usually see these columns go out at 50k".. like wow really, and nothing has been done?

GM wont do anything about the column because it costs to much to perform a recall on a part that doesnt cause harm to the owner, just some clunking. Also they didnt sell a lot of cobalts (hence why they killed the line) so its not a major issue to them. Look into the rockauto replace that was mentioned before (i forget who posted it)
That makes sense, I figured it was because it lagged in its class for sales, in the same time period the Ford Focus sold about 60k more
But the Ford Focus also had a refresh in 08, which I believe greatly bolstered sales, while the Cobalt went relatively unchanged from 05-10.
If it makes you feel any better, I'm bringing in my car today to get the steering column replaced for the first time. It really bothers me too, reminds me of old shitty cars where the steering wheel can move but the tires don't, hate it.
I have only owned MY SS for 4 years and its been to the dealer at least a dozen times for different things, my family also has GM vehicles and everyone one has had to go into the dealer for several reasons and repairs. GM's used to care about their product and stand behind their customers but it seems like they don't really care much at all about customer service or standing behind their products. This will be my last GM car for sure, if you are out of your bumper to bumper warranty I would sell it ASAP.

OP you sound like a whiny bitch, **** breaks....spend the $100 and fix the god damn thing.
No car is perfect, count yourself lucky that $100 is all you have to spend to fix the problem.

i think they are all quoting a price from rockauto which has a better made one for 100. i think, dont quote me on it.
