Camshaft Positioning sensor code

chevycobaltforum .com/forum/f9/exhaust-camshaft-sensor-code-5800/
long story short ive had 5 Camshaft Positioning sensor codes thrown in a matter of about 18mo. the first one happened while i was cruising down the freeway and after an oil change and clearing the code from the ECU no issue. within the last month or so it has happened an additional 4 times which kind of raises a flag to me to be concerned. the first time it happened the code i got was P0014, then recently it was P0010 and P0011 three times. after the last time it threw a code the car started acting funny. it wouldnt start on the first attempt but rather the 3rd. and now it somewhat feels like its learching forward and when in park the motor seems to rev from 700 to 900 back and forth. sometimes it clears itself up and sometimes it just keeps going.

2009 cobalt LT auto bone stock.

Did you replace the 2 sensors that bolt into the top of the valve cover?

i have not, are they in need of replacing? the first time this happened i was shown this article GM#PIP4469F: Intermittent DTC P0011 And P0014 P0016 P0017 - Cobalt SS Network and thought maybe it was just muck in the oil. now that its thrown the codes 5 times im slightly concerned. thanks for your input

First rule of owning a Cobalt: If a sensor throws a code, replace the sensor ;-)

I circled them for ya. One bolt each, and un-clip the harness connection. They are around $30 a piece on RockAuto.

Car has a timing chain, not a belt so you should be good there. Just check the usual, oil, fluids and plugs and I think you'll be good

I have the first sensor if you want it. Just PM me your address and I'll send it to you. I don't have any need for it.

its been roughly 2-3 weeks and 300 miles or so since i replaced both camshaft sensors. yesterday after changing the oil we drove about 30 miles and while at a stop light the car was trying to learch forward, almost like i was holding the brake and hitting the gas at the same time. it felt kind of rough. got to where we were going and turned the car off, once i turned it back on the check engine light was on yet again and the code was P0014 yet again. is it possible that ive got a problem with the car/wiring or got a bunk sensor? seems odd id get the same code thrown 3-5 times in the last efw months. on a side note my oil filter looked odd when i pulled it out, almost like it was crushed slightly. picture below

Our cars have both these sensors. "CPS #2" are on top of the valve cover near the coil packs. "CPS #1" I know one is on the back side the head on the driver side of the motor...

You can try it. I don't have much experience with the LT's, but when my car threw this code, my cam was all messed up. Mine happened during a race though

Which sensors did you replace, the ones on the top of the valve cover are not sensors, they are solenoids which actuate the VVT phasers on your car. Common issue that they go bad and they throw those codes, and also disable the traction control in the process. The two black sensors bolted to the right side of the head on the front and back are the camshaft position sensors. Not as common that they fail.

Also when you replace the solenoids, they are labeled "int" and "exh" on the plastic connector portion, make sure you installed them in the correct locations.

these are what i replaced. i made sure i installed them in the proper places. so is it possible that the sensors on the right side of the head the culprit throwing the codes?
