cobalt ss impresses at Gand Am cup opener

Holtom duo strong at Daytona!
Father and son duo impress at Grand Am Cup opener

DAYTONA FLA, - Four years ago, Jamie Holtom first teamed up with his father, Jim Holtom, to compete in an enduro karting race just outside Ottawa, Ontario, which they won after lapping every kart but one. On Friday, the two teamed up again to give Chevrolet's new Cobalt SS its best top 10 finish in the Grand Am Cup season opener at Daytona.

"This is a very, very good start for us," Jim Holtom said after the ST class SCADAPack Chevy Cobalt SS he shared with his son came home a very respectable seventh in class. "I started the race because we knew the first few laps would be intense with 68 entries. After 40 minutes I handed it over to Jamie without a single mark on it. I'm pleased to say that he brought it home in the same condition."

When Jim handed the car over, it was in seventh place. Jamie motored his way up the field and at one point was scored second in class. "We had a bit of a fuel pickup issue, which meant we had to stop near the end, just to be sure," Jamie said after his stint behind the wheel.

The extra stop, dropped the SCADAPack Cobalt SS down the order to ninth, but a strong finishing effort by Jamie put the car seventh in class at the checkered flag. "I think Georgian Bay Motorsports did a terrific job getting this car ready in the short amount of time they had. You have to remember the first time this Cobalt turned a wheel was Monday afternoon." Jamie added.

"With this result I am really looking forward to the rest of the season," Jamie said. "To drive my first ever race in the USA at Daytona International Speedway is a dream come true. The Chevy Cobalt is so much fun to drive, and is so responsive and powerful, we couldn't help but finish well".

"I am happy for all of us that got this program together in a very short time frame. Thanks to John Powell, Georgian Bay Motorsports, Control Microsystems SCADAPack, and GM for all their help," Jim said.

interesting. I don't follow racing much, is it a stock car category. Did they modify the drivtrain?

No fair,... how come they get one? Lucky bastards.

Very cool, if they wouldn't have had problems they would have challenged for class lead! To echo Osmose's question, does anyone know what kind of modifications are allowed for Grand Am Racing? I noticed that they are actually using the stock rear spoiler and not much for body mods... could the rear wing actually be functional?
