Cobalt SS/SC or 07 Mustang GT
My dad just bought a new GT. I've had a chance to drive it, and both cars have their pluses and minuses.
The GT is a much cooler car, will be an icon, the RWD is much more fun launching, and in terms of mods, the mustang has much more potential and aftermarket support.
The Cobalt is cheaper, gets better gas mileage, cheaper insurance, has satelite radio stock, has a more spacious interior, does better in the winter, and would be a fun car for autocross.
Both cars should be plenty reliable, with the only x-factor being reliability under mods, and how much you plan to mod.

If you are looking to jump onto an auto-x course, you would be better off with the SS S/C assuming you got the G85 package.
I personally don't care for the looks of the GT Mustangs. I really hate those "fog lamps", I know they are like the original, but I really don't care for them.
Reliablility, most auto manufacturers now a days are pretty close. The only problems I have had with my car have been cosmetic with the exception of my brake rotors becoming grooved. You can prevent the brakes by simply changing the pads for softer ones ASAP.

Frankly, i would have to say that both have their advantages and disadvantages, the cobalt being cheaper and better on gas, mustang having the power torque and history behind it........im just glad that you are taking domestics under consideration, because lord knows all you see are riced out honda's and acura's, they're overrated and any bandwagon pig will jump into a honda because someone else has.....
I've driven both an '06 GT and a '06 SS 2.4, the SS did fell more nimble, but also felt more confined than the GT. I've owned a '02 Z24, and was raised on Chevys, my Dad and grandparents retired from GM. I don't believe the GT would have any more back seat leg room than the SS, but thats also not a big concern.
Yes I could wait for the rumored '08 SS turbo to come out but there is also a rumor of an '08 Boss Mustang with a 395hp N/A 5.4L DOHC. Then what?
