Considering Trading in the SS

I have been debating on trading my SS for a little while. There are a few cars that I want, but mostly the 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix GT w/GenV SC.

I know that the Grand Prix will be slower to start off, as I originally came from a GTP before owning the Cobalt. I think I learned a lot by having the cobalt, and still plan to keep one of them around for now. I just miss the brutal amount of torque that the 3800 delivers in comparison, and I have run out of reasonable mods for my SS.

Looks like the GT's are selling for about $16-18k.

My main question I guess is, what are you guys getting on trade in for your cobalts? I don't want to carry over much negative equity if I don't have to.

Yeah, something kicked in my head and said the same thing about 45 minutes ago. GTO's are obviously still nice cars. I still love boost though, I think I would drive a grocery cart if it had a blower on it.

I just wish the Grand Prix's were still in coupes. I had a black GTP Coupe :-( I miss it, everything except that god awful taupe colored interior.

Looks like the GTO's that are cheap in my area are beat on. No thanks. I still like the Supercharged GT's. Nobody notices them, and because they are not advertised much as supercharged, most people think it ws just replaced by the GXP. Afterall the <'05 GT's were not supercharged so they upgraded it, although thye ditched the HUD and Paddleshift.

I love the GTP's but there weak tranny's kinda scare me. It's your money so do whatever you want with it and buy what makes you happy.

i would take a GTO anyday..

fit and finish on the interiors is amazing compared to a Grand Prix..

Boost or not.. the cars arent in the same league! Drive one and you'll see.

I used to work for GM, I drove GTO's for fun! I really like the GTO also, and considered buying one for a while, $27,000 brand new in '06 was not a bad deal, but more than I could afford for a daily driver at the time. If I can find a good used one I would consider it over the Supercharged GT.

I know the GTP's have weak tranny's, I broke one a year ago. I have also seem GTO's break rear ends too, so even they are not invincible, though in a different league yes.

I was wanting to tear apart the GP and do head work, intercooler, pulley swap, injector upgrade, headers, DP, etc. I would like to have a ~350whp automatic GP if I go that route. Certainly doable with what I can do there.

its so frikken easy to work on a grand prix it isnt even funny.

I put in a built trans for only $1900. After the trans, the only thing you have to worry about is KR.... intercooler and you are set.

Axles are good into the 11s easily... many many people running 1.7 60's on stock axles.

now my question is, since they do not have the COMP G in 06... does the GT (s/c) have the 2.93 gearing like a stock GTP... or does it have the 3.29 gearing like a Comp G, and a regular GT?

I was wondering that too. It has a stock 0-60 of 6.5secs, so I assume Comp G, and they are 100 pounds lighter than a comp g, but you lose the paddle shift and heads up display. After I tune the tranny there will be no need for paddle shifts.

Yeah GP's are a cinch to work on, unless you are installing the rear driver side spark plug, or rockers on the rear head.

Cobalts need as much work to get high twelves as well. Yet are less likely. I also used to own a GTP, and have seen the tranny fall apart. On the otherhand I have seen more go wrong with the SS's.

Looks like the GT gets the 2.93 gear ration and not the 3.29 of the Comp G. Atleast according to some unheard of website, nothing reliable. I guess you could always swap either of them out for the ~3.69 if you really wanted to roast the tires. The 2.93 is supposedly faster on the launch and easier to control. Anyone who has driven the 350+hp modded GP's should know what out of control wheelspin is :-)

When did you trade it in, what year model?

Thanks for answering that part of the question.

Well, it's good to know that someone like the newer GP's.
My girlfriend is looking into an '07 GP GT with the 3800 SC... and she wants me to mod it too! I'll give the Cobalt the credit for making her love a blower whine...

I really like the newer GP's, cooler interior by FAR compared to the '01 GTP I had, those seem 15 years outdated now.

As for the new G8, I saw a Metallic Orange Holden Commodore on Saturday surprisingly at the local car show, and it was SWEET! Unfortunately they are not out yet, and will be too highly priced for my wallet.
