Coolant Anyone..?

Hey guys,

So, now that summer is upon us, I was wondering if I should begin to look into getting a coolant flush and fill.. I've had the car over 5 years now (first owner) and it's got about 73k on it.. I drive it everyday.. It's run in all weather..

While doing some stuff under the hood today, I looked at the coolant reservoir, and it looked a little cloudy.. Wasn't sure if that was normal or what.. It was up to temp, and thus cooling down.. The cars coolant temp readout generally seems to be about where it should be, and the aux fan kicks in where it should (but I'm gonna drop it a little when I do HPT)..

In other words, everything basically SEEMS like it's working fine, but is it about time to look into doing this? If so, should I go to the dealer, or just a Minekie or something? About what should this cost..

Thanks!

just do it yourself its very easy. theres a drain plug on the bottom passanger side of the radiator. you can take it out by hand

I would just drain and fill the radiator and then get in a routine of doing that every 30,000 miles. At your current mileage I would say doing a complete flush is optional. If you do it yourself, you'll need to run it up to operating temp and open the air purge valve over the thermostat cover (assuming that's where it is on a Cobalt?) and likely need to add more coolant. Also would be a good time to do things like changing the transmission fluid if you haven't already.

I did the tranny fluid at 50. I'll go ahead and do this, but now I have to see if I'm gonna do it myself or not..

How will replacing this help? Will it stay at a steady temp more?

Coolant prevents corrosion from within the block and such, so when the coolant additives wear out corrosion can start to develop like it can if just water was in there. So other than cooling and not freezing in cold weather, coolant also keeps the inside of the block and such clean. Just good preventative maintenance.
