That SUCKS. If that's the case then I think I'm going to order a replacement while it's under warranty. To me it's stupid to not have the instrument panel on when the light sensor says so, especially since mine doesn't come on until well after it's too dark to see anything. I did a little "test" with my SS and a friend's LS parked next to each other facing the same direction my SS took almost 20 minutes longer for the lights to come on. By that time it was almost completely dark out. Street lights were on, all other cars had their headlights on...so obviously if it can't be adjusted, then there's something wrong with mine.

I wouldn't mind turning the lights on manually, did that for years on the Cavalier, but not being able to see the instrument panel is unacceptable. I would like to be able to tell quickly and easily how fast I am going without having to squint and actually look intently to read the speedometer. I can't believe the engineers at GM couldn't have put an override on the interior lights...either that or allowed for the light sensor to be adjusted...to me that's just stupid.

Yes I agree that the auto-dash light feature is annoying. they turn on too late. As far as the parking lamps being on instead of DRL's, there is less draw on your charging system, plus the bulbs are cheaper to replace. Has anyone else noticed you can spot a GM vehicle from a very far distance, because of the very bright parking lamps?

the only way the Instrument panel lights come on is when that sensor says so, even if you manually turn on the headlights. This is normal.
My dash lights came on everytime I turned the headlights on manually with my GTP, although it was never necessary since the sensor was more sensitive and the lights came on alot sooner. Also, if I remember correctly, the headlights were always on for the daytime running lights, not the parking lights or turn signals.

that's kind of wierd to me. In Oregon, probably other states, it is illegal to drive with only your parking lights on. I'm sure these lights are legitimately daytime running lights, because someone said that they are brighter than the parking lights, but even so if a cop mistook those amber lights for parking lights and pulled me over I'd be pissed. and in my town the cops will pull you over for anything.

See, that's my thinking too...that's why I said I thought my sensor was bad. The first guy I talked to at the dealership said "Yeah, they'll do that sometimes not all the sensors have the same sensitivity." The other guy said "Well we can look at it but I don't think there's anything we can do to fix it." Somehow they didn't understand I WANT IT REPLACED.

Really I don't mind the fact that the headlights come on a little later, I still have the ambers on or I can just turn the headlights on using the switch. It's the instrument panel lights that **** me off...it's kind of important to me to be able to see how fast I'm going. I mean I could just guess, but I don't think that would fly with the cops if I guessed wrong and got pulled over. Ideally I wish you could adjust the sensor like most automatic light sensors, but since that's apparantly not possible, the least they could do is allow a manual override on the interior lights so you can see your instrument panel.

They can easily tell the difference once they're behind you...if your tail lights are on, then you're driving with your parking lamps on, if the tail lights are off, then they know you're running on DRLs...they SHOULD think to check that before they pull you over.

Agreed. Mine is the same as yours. The dealership says they can do nothing. If GM blew the design then they should come up with a fix that the Techs can fix .

I have bitched and moaned about DRL's since I bought my 96 Cavalier back in 2001. I hated them. Still hate them and will always hate them. Luckily, with the help of some J-body.org folks, I managed to disable them. On my 98 Cavalier, they just stopped working. I was ecstatic!

One thing that I was really happy to see on my new Cobalt was the fact that there is a way to disable the DRL's! It's funny, all these great new 'safety' items don't really mean dick to me. If you know how to drive then ABS, DRL's and air bags are pretty useless. On both Cavaliers, I disabled the ABS, and DRL's and on the 96 Cavalier, I had a sneaking suspicion that the airbags weren't going to deploy if got head-on'd by something heavy (the first clue was the "AIR BAG" light was on all the time)
