I am hearing from alot of people that I should do an oil change at my first 1000km or so cause of shavings and things like that from a new engine. Is there any truth to this and when did you guys get your oil changed?

 

change it with in 3,000 miles with mobil 1 syntetic oil(6.5 quarts), there wont be any shavings, the engine is broken in from the factory

 

I don't think the LS has synthetic oil. An early oil change is an inexpensive precaution to extend the life of your engine. I have seen someone else say the engines were broken in from the factory. Where did this info come from? I find that hard to believe.

 

So I should do it soon? And that "Oil Life" thing means nothing at this point in the cars life? Also what oil should I use?

 

I would put another 1000 km. or so on the car. I use pennzoil 5w30. Any name brand 5w30 would be good. Mobil(get it with exxon branding it's cheaper), Castrol, Valvoline,Havoline, etc... .

 

OMG!

The oil filter on the SS is in the most retarded place ever. Did they let the janitor in Engineering decide where to put the filter? Lemme see.......Lets put it under the supercharger to thoroughly **** off everyone that owns this car and make it a general PITA to change the oil! Plus, I spent $48 just on oil for the change!

O well, at least now after the first change I can go longer between $89 oil changes!

its there for a reason!!!!

 

They did it purposely to deter people from changing their own oil so you have to take it to the dealer and get ripped off. It's all about the money. That's my opinion. I honestly believe it was done on purpose. Anyone with any common sense can see that's not a very good place for the oil filter. I will spite them and change my own oil anyway though.

 

they put it there because its an easy place to access on the non-supercharged ecotecs. instead of casting a whole new block, the ss crowd gets the bad end of the deal. of course, i'd rather fiddle with a filter every 8k or so than be paying an extra 500 bucks for a different block just so nothing blocks the oil filter.

 

The oil life monitoring system is all fine and good. It's common practice that an early oil change can extend the life of an engine. It's in my opinion more important with the closer tolerances in today's engines. There will be wear as parts seat together. Do you have to do it. Of course not. Should you, yeah I think you should and that's what was asked for is advice. I currently own 3 vehicles with over 200,000 miles on the original engine and none of them has needed any internal work. They all run great. That's the basis behind my advice.

 

Lets get some group buys going on for some Mobil-1 Syn!!!

Mobil 1 isn't just for the SS model, you can use it in any new vehicle. Its by far the best oil on the market, for the extra few dollars each oil change its more than worth using it.

It offers the best protection against thermal breakdown and engine wear, and keeps everything lubricated at all times with the SuperSyn additive - which is especially important during cold starts. Synthetic is the best, theres no question about it

I'd say just go to Wal-Mart, pick up 5 quarts of Mobil 1 (in the viscosity you need) and grab an AC Delco oil filter. Not sure if Wal-Mart carries AC Delco, so you may need to go to your nearest auto parts store for that.

So for $24, you'll know that you're using the best oil and filter available, and your engine will run perfectly for many years to come

 

Thats right except instead fo going to walmart support your local car parts store instead and they should have AC delco right there... yes I agree Mobile 1 is worht it on a new car

 

I agree about not liking Walmart, but the fact is their price will beat your local auto parts store most likely.

 

I went to GM for my first oil change this week and just to let u guys know for those who think u have to take the supercharger off.... don't do it! and another hint. In Ontario they charged me almost 13$ for 1L of oil. u can buy it at Wal-mart for 7.50$. It cost 110$ total for the guy to change it.Buy your own oil and save yourself some money. It's the same brand.

 

I agree Mobil 1 is the best oil on the market. Just pointing out that your oil change doesn't have to be expensive on the non ss model. I also believe that the conventional oils today will do a damn fine job if you regularly maintain your vehicle. I use Pennzoil and have never had a problem.

 

Eek, it's NOT broken in from the factory! I dunno why ppl keep saying that!

And of course there's no shavings in the oil that you can see! There better not be! "Shavings" that big are more like chunks of metal, and you're in some serious trouble if that's floating around! But that doesnt mean there's not still tiny particulate suspended in the oil that can sand away at your internals for 4 months because you're too cheap to fork out $25 for an oil change.

Point is, whether you believe the myths or not, an oil change costs $25 bucks. It's cheap insurance for a car you just payed $18k for. Do the first one early.

 

I just did my first oil change on my SS 2 days ago.
1st-took six quarts
2nd-it was not difficult, its fairly easy to reach in under the intake to unscrew the filter once loose and remove it. In fact, it was extremely clean, no oil anywhere.
3rd-putting it back was a little trickier as it was hard to get the threads squared up.

To break loose and tighten, go down in between the intake/blower and blosk with an extension and a universal, very easy.

Just my experience, first time.

 

anyone know if they make a Magnetic tipped oil pan drain plug for the cobalt LS? I'm also going to be looking for one for a SS/SC soon too....

First Oil change on my g/fs LS was at 500 miles, at 3000 we are moving it over to Mobil 1. Hoping it lasts forever...(She's going to get to 1000 miles tomorrow :-)
