GM says it is recalling 1.3 million compact cars in the US Canada and Mexico to fix power steering motors that can fail.Models covered by the recall include 2005 to 2010 chevy cobalts, 2007 to 2010 pontiac G5s,2005 and 2006 pontiac pursuits soild in canada and 2005 and 2006 pontiac G4s sold in Mexico.

Girlfriend sent me this this morning. There has been 14 injuries, apparently. The way I see it, you have to be pretty stupid to crash just because you lose power steering.

Do not bring it in until youve reached 120,000 miles or 10 years after the car was first purchased...whichever comes first

I dont see it as though the drivers, that have crashed, are stupid. I for one have been driving a suburban and have the power steering went out. It really shocked me.. and im not weak in least. Imagine driving 70-80 in big city traffic. You change lanes in mid afternoon after lunch and everyone is trying to get back to work. You suddenly with out cause or knowledge lose controld of your steering. You try to correct and your wheels are locked in a fixed position untill you manage to stand and put all your body weight into the wheel. Only to end up in the median or someone's vehicle. Thats possible for a woman, and some men. Specially if you are driving slow at the time. Its somewhat easier to turn with more speed depending on the vehicle make and model.

If you're driving slow why wouldn't you just... Oh, I don't know... STOP THE VEHICLE???

I've driven my lifted Jeep with oversized tires for a week without power steering. Driving at highway speeds is the EASIEST time to maneuver the vehicle without power assist. It's when you slow to a crawl that it gets ridiculously hard.

Toyota's gas pedal recall, and their possible power steering recall is still more serious then our recall. The car warns you when the power steering goes out via a chime and message on dash. I have driven a couple of cars without power steering including my 98' Cavalier winter beater. Yes, it makes it hard to turn, but you will still have controll of your vehicle.

Also, They don't say what the injuries are, they could be something as simple as some pretty, powderpuff, wimpy girl broke her fresh manicure trying to turn off the highway.

And if you're an inexperienced punk driver in his first car, joy riding with his buddies and smoking a jont and all of a sudden he tries to change lanes only to learn the steering is much stiffer than normal? Sure, he can grab the wheel with both hands (he was probably holding it with one hand, upside down, on the top of the wheel to begin with) in a way to be able to put some muscle into it. But in that short instant, or more because he's new at this kind of thing and they didn't teach it in Drivers Ed last year in High School, he's run into the car ahead of him that he was just changing lanes to pass.

The way I look at it is if you teeny boppers out there can call every other driver an idiot because you don't think their level of intelligence is as high as yours than I can call all of YOU idiots because I don't think YOUR level of intelligence is as high as MINE. I'm sitting here laughing my ass off thinking about the stupid mistakes YOU will make in your driving experiences. Make no mistake!! You WILL have an accident sometime in your life. You see, I've already done all the stupid things and made all the stupid mistakes but I was LUCKY enough to survive.

As a retired over the road driver with several million miles under his belt, I've seen a lot of horror stories. And deaths. More often than not involving young people who thought they had the world by the ass when in reality they only had hold of the hair AROUND that ass. I've witnessed way too many drivers taking everything for granted, taking way too many chances. Unforunately, the best driving teacher is experience. Until you personally experience a driving situation you will not know how you will react. Sitting there TALKING about it you may know exactly what you'd do but in the real world, when it happens in a flash, you don't really know. After you've experienced it once and if you have survived it you'll know better what to do the next time.

There's been some really stupid comments on this thread. Such as;

Girlfriend sent me this this morning. There has been 14 injuries, apparently. The way I see it, you have to be pretty stupid to crash just because you lose power steering. Answer. What if that happened to your girlfriend? Would she think fast enough to react correctly? Would she be physically strong enough to muscle the steering wheel around? WHAT WOULD SHE DO? And What do you THINK she should do? Talk it over with her then take her out to the driveway and ask her to turn the steering wheel. With the engine OFF.

Another one;

Answer. Where would you stop the vehicle? In the middle of the driving lane? You'd stop the vehicle because you can't steer it so I guess that is your answer. I'm sure you're big enough and strong enough to drive your macho monster truck down the highway with the power steering out. Maybe not such a good idea, but you could do it. Not all steering failures occur at highway speeds. But exactly what does that have to do with losing power steering in an emergency situation anyway?

I pray it's not your grandma that has the next power steering failure.

Ouch. Way to be mature, Mr. "Experienced Driver".

Steering at speed without PS assist isn't hard and if you paid attention at all in driver's ed they should have taught you what to do in the event of losing power steering (they did for me) which is to maintain speed, get over to the shoulder and stop in a straight line. If someone is so emotionally fragile that they freak out over something like that then they need to go back to class or be taken off the road - for the safety of everyone else. And if your only safe option is to stop the vehicle in the driving lane, then that is what you need to do - that's what 4-way flashers are for. Delaying the soccer mom in the Suburban behind you is better than taking them out by losing control of your vehicle.

You are an idiot to think you have to be stupid to crash when power steering goes out...

My power steering went out on my car, and the only reason I didnt get in an accident is because i turned my head a second time to check the lane was clear.

The articles make it sound like the car drives like a car without power steering and this is just not the case.

Thats prety much true for alot of recalls ive seen...

The tires on the SUVS? Ive had a blowout flat and was able to keep from fliping my vehical over.... it was a 1985 Plymouth Voyager at the time.. Hell I was an idiot teenager then too.

Toyota's throttle jam? Again,
Ive had throttle jams (In my shadow and in my minivan) and was able to stop the car despite the stuck throttle... Granted it took BOTH feet on the brake to do it, and you could smell them when I got it stoped. Turning the ignition off works too.....

Ive had intermitent loss of power steering before without crashing as well... Sometimes my old shadow would loose power steering going through puddles. (Belt gets wet and slips)

But keep in mind
most people alive today are idiots....
