Ignition lock cylinder replacement help.

The lock cylinder on my 05 balt is bad. Having one hell of a time getting the key to go all the way in, then turn forward. I have a new key, that didn't help, so I have to replace the cylinder. Has anyone done this on the balt? I have done a few before.

My biggest question is do I have to remove the steering wheel?

My coworker had the same issue on her 05 Cobalt. It ended being the shifter (auto trans). I did some searching on other websites and there is a small microswitch on the shifter or a tab near it which goes bad and causes difficulty shifting or difficulty of key operation. GM has a service bulletin addressing the same issue you are experiencing. It is bulletin no. 6-07-30-004c. Just a thought, hope this helps. Here are some links to this issue.

Thanks bud, but that is not the problem. Mine is a standard. The key comes out just fine, just doesn't go in and turn the ingnition. I'm thinking it had to be the lock cylinder

Does anyone have a manual that they could look it up for me? It would say step one remove the steering wheel.

Unfortunately they are not about to fix it for free.
