shock shaft should be stainless steel colored if Im thinking what you mean.
It does look like theres something at the top of the shaft brown, not sure what that is maybe a reflection

Anyway I did order some lowering springs 1 inch front, two inch lower rear made by ZZP for the 2.2l.

Might not not be the answer but a good place to start.
Judging my the amount that shock extended, it is sitting way to compressed at ride height.

Yeah I don't get that. If you put lowering springs in, it will make it worse. Are you missing end links? Did he cut the housings wrong?

My links are fine. The shocks were cut properly( I took a leak under the boot) I do think the koni shafts are smaller than my fe1, probably more the height of an fe5 shock. so I will try lowering it like the 99%. Maybe it will work maybe it won’t, getting some conflicting answers but hey I gotta move forward

It happens some time when you mod a car. Sometimes you like it afterward and other times not.

Our climate is hard on cars.

It looks like it's had a hard life. There's probably a ton of maintenance to do.

It hasn’t had that hard a life.. it’s been in the family three generations.
Was given to my parents at about 2000km, there after it was given to me a about 78000km last year.

Now me and my brother damaged the car visually, all the scratches and dents= learing how to winter drive long ago.
And I probably did a number on the suspension not caring to much about hitting bad roads really fast¿

been in one collision, I think grille, headlights and impact absorber were replaced, facia was reused as it wasn’t torn just bent.

When I got it the motor was so sluggish omg.

Re did all fluids, new battery, spark plugs, ignition coils, new maf, and the motor was reborn. (Other stuff to I can’t recall)

Next started my journey to the aftermarket realm of cobalts and the like.
I estimate now with a full exhaust, headers downpipe and cat back CAI, a tune, upgraded Ignition this car is sitting at about 150hp to the wheels, ~200 to the crank, bout 50 over stock.

SOLVED: FE1 suspension with koni shocks:
you need lowering springs. Stock springs are too long for koni.

Had them installed and well it’s gonna take some getting use to being lowered but my noise is gone, and wow does it handle better!
and the cars not slammed so I’m happy
