Long-time Saturn guy makes the switch
Greetings fellow Cobalt-Heads. I've been looking for a foum like this since my purchase of an '05 Cobalt LS sedan a couple weeks ago (gotta love the GM Employee Price for Everyone). As much as I would love to have bought an SS Supercharged, funds were prohibitive (not only for the car but for gas and insurance) and the manual transmission is no fun in Chicago traffic.
I've been a GM fanboy for as long as I can remember. Had a '92 Cavalier, then made the move over to Saturn. My last 3 cars were a '97 SL1, '00 SL2 and '04 Ion. Having test driven several Cobalts over the last year, I knew this car was vastly superior to the Ion in every way and heck, way better than any other American, German or Korean small car. It even beats the Corolla and Civic as far as I'm concerned. The Cobalt is exactly the car GM needs to do with its other divisions that it did with Cadillac a couple years ago.
Just wanted to say hello and I hope to stay onboard in this community.
Here are a couple pics right after I gave the car a thorough washing.

I have had 6 Cavalier since 1996. My mom has had one, my friends all bought Cavaliers because of the wicked hell-beat I put all mine through. All had no problems at all other than normal wear and tear. I really wanted a leftover 05 Cavalier, but after driving the Cobalt, I was really impressed! Mine is a black base coupe with a 5speed... I live out in the sticks, so the manual is not so bad to have.

The Cavalier, when redesigned in 95 was a decent car compared to the competiton but they continued to evolve while the Cavalier did not. This made the Cavalier look increasing old and unrefined--and for the times it was. Pre 95s were okay but nothing terribly good.
The Cobalt is the best small car GM has ever built period. Its no wonder they had to come up with a new name.

They didnt just come up with a new name for the Cavy and call it a Cobalt. They canned the Cavalier and created an entirely different car.

um yeah I know that. My point was that the Cavalier name was so tarnished it didn't matter how good the replacement was--the mere reputation of the name could not be saved. So a brand new name for a brand new car and no one can say anyting bad about it.

There is a kid here in our car club who has an absolutely beat to **** 91 Cavalier base sedan with the 2.2L automatic. To say that this car is thrashed is an understatement. You would actually have to see what he does to this car daily to really understand what I mean. It hasn't had the oil changed in over 6 months, he only fixes stuff when it breaks and that engine is still silent and does not use oil.
In my experience, most of the motoring press are a bunch effete snobs that sneer at ANYTHING domestic automakers produce. You make the best car in the world, slap a Chevy or Pontiac emblem on it and they would tell you that it's nice, but you're better off getting the Honda or Toyota, just because the Japanese are so much better at building cars than the stupid Americans. The Cavalier looked a little dated towards the end and the interior was attrocious in the accomodations department (my 98 coupe had way more room than a friend of mines 2004 coupe), but they were rock-solid dependable.
Here in the Adirondacks, we get snow for right around 5 or 6 months out of the year and we have to drive everywhere, most times over 50-60 miles a day just to get to your job and you'd be surprised how many Cavaliers/Sunfires are running around up here! All last winter, I drove my 98 Cavalier around on bald BF Goodrich Radial T/A's (215-60-14s) and never had a problem going anywhere in the snow! I was really sad to see these cars go!
I am seeing after a week of having my Cobalt, that these cars are leaps and bounds ahead of the Cobalt. A friend of mine who has a 2004 Civic says that the Cobalt is way more fun to drive that his car.
Anyways.
