My 2.4ss is weak :(
Find somone around you who has HPTuners and can tune an automatic. Add some ignition timing advancement and tune that transmission for quicker firmer shifts. Local guy here dropped half a second off his e/t with transmission tuning alone.
your friends car as 5 eand your an auto. No surpise that you lost. If the transmisisns are the same the 2.4L SS is faster.
tour friends car as 5 speed and your an auto. No surpise that you lost. If the transmissons are the same the 2.4L SS is faster.
Or is he auto too?

Shut up Video... My Auto 2.4L Sedan > Your Manual 2.0L Coupe...
You wait till I come back to UT. ...its on like donkey kong...in a ping thong.
Ok, To spread some light on this thread.
Ive raced a Sentra Spec somethin nerother...Spec v? whatever the "fastest" one is.
anywho, the guy had a stick, ALOT more mods (since i was only runnin a Injen SRI), I think he had Headers, Downpipe, Highflow Cat, CAI, exhaust, and some other little goodies...
He won me by about 2 - 3 cars?
I know theres a spec-v? runnin around here that tries racing me, he's got the exhaust and some other "mods"...last few times he's raced me..i make him look stupid. (hes an stick as well).
So, either you A. didnt launch well. or B. he's got alot more mods than you.
Tips to launching a 2.4L SS Auto:
From a Dig: Throw it down into L... Push Brake & Gas @ same time, this will bring your RPM's to about 2k. DO NOT NEUTRAL DROP. Simply because 1, RPM's are too high (4k), and theres a nice delay (feels like 2 sec).
From a Roll: Throw it in L... if your going about 40 or so...slow down to 30.. when you hit 30, your car will downshift.
Keep your RPMS high as you can, then punch it. then shift to I..and leave it there.
Hope this helps.

If you really did have regular gas in the tank then it is highly possible that the ignition timing was retarding to prevent pinging -- you will lose some horseys if that was the case. If you're going to drive aggressively you should only use premium.
The less gas the better when racing because it's less weight. I doubt the oil has much t to do with it but the tires can make a BIG difference in traction which ultimately equals better track times. There is a nice balance between inflation and traction. I don't know what tires you have so I couldn't tell you really but it's all trial and error to find the right amount.
Even with a turbo you still have a weak stock auto tranny and you would have to get a high stall torque converter to build boost off the line and have to do some work to get better shifts. Power adders are only as good as their supporting mods. Plus if this is your DD adding tons of horsepower probably isn't a good idea because there will be down time no matter how you plan it.
If you want to run with the SERs of this world you can do that by sticking with bolt ons and some other really minor things.

Would getting a high stall torque converter or messin wit ur trans make u get a lot more MPG. Thats probly the reason why the Cobalt has a pretty bad auto trans. If you had an auto trans that shifted at redline all the time, would it be faster than a stick?
And how is the SS/SC's gearin because iv heard that its first gear is too tall or sumtin. Not sure wat it means, but is there anyway to change the gearin?
I think more gas in the tank makes a car drive smoother. A LOT smoother and more gas cant weight that much more. When i fill my crapalier (2000 base model, 120 HP
), it accelerates SO MUCH smoother and faster. Maybe you cant tell because your car has a lot more power.

1. More wieght = slower times--period. So with more gas your car is slower not faster. yes even your Cavalier.
And think about this---the gas tank is in the reat of the car. When you acclerate hard--weight transfers from the front to the rear. On a RWD car this is good ccause the reat tires get more traction--on a FWD car this is bad--it unloads the front tires--they spin easier.
2. The Coalt does not have a bad automatic trans at all.
3. Why would you want an auto trans to shift at redlijne all the time?? Your rngine/trans life would decreaase not to mention your mpg. Everything being equal--95% of the time---the manual is faster then the auto--because the automatic loses more hp to the wheels.
THis might be a incredible simple fix here. But we'll try it.
You did start off in "L" gear and bump it up to "I" right? Not try to do the whole thing in "D"?
THe engine and tranny on my SS/NA(which is stock) I will burnout for about two seconds before catching when I start in "L" And that's without torque braking.
