My wheel almost fell off!!! Wtf!!!

so pretty much FML!

basically three studs broke, AT ONE TIME!!!!

i'll tell the rest of the story when I get out of class tonight at 9:50

EDIT:::

So here is what happend, i'm driving and as I turn onto an access road i notice really bad thumping and then right before I get onto the highway I can literally feel the tire wobbling back and forth so I pulled to somewhere safe asap and get out like WTF just happend!!!??? the wheel is hanging on by one lug nut and the top is angled out way way far. I put on after market rims like 3 months ago and know I didnt over/under torque them so I dont know why it happend. I was due for an alignment and tire balance but idk. Scary ****, my car was so so so close to being screwed up something bad.

68 bucks for the tow and I pick it up at 8am tomorrow, lets hope it doesnt cost an arm and a leg. Pretty sure no other damage was caused.

side note: I just thought about this, I had pretty noticeable vibrations when braking which I thought was just do to my rotors needing to be machined. Could that have possibly vibrated the lugs loose causing the studs to eventually give way???

This EXACT thing happened to my wife's car, passenger front wheel. Her's is a 2006 LT coupe. Just bought her rims the month before and now only have 3... and they are discontinued.... I've put on plenty of rims and never had issues. I swap mine around 4 times a year with rotation and winter/summer sets. Always torqued to spec

most of the time its due to cheap aftermarket lugs, i changed back to stock lugs after 3 studs broke, each a different rim, since the swap i have been good/

seen that happen before to a riced out sunfire...dude must have spent like $4000 in a gay body kit).. Me and my friends were just chilling and we hear a grinding noise and look over...sunfire sliding down the road with a front passenger wheel bouncing past him. Ran over and talked to him...he said him and his friend just rotated the tires. Asked him what torque specs did he use...he said he wasnt sure, they used a air gun and just hit them as tight as they can go....broke all the studs off. Recked the rotor, control arm, wheel, body kit.

i doubt Gm as cheap as they can be, would cut cost on crucial parts

im gettin Motegi SP10 rims tm. (hopefully) Jack Williams is puttin them on for me. If something like this happens, they would be responsible right? How often should I check them? should I get different lugs or is Motegi/AM Racing lugs good?

its not the lugs its, using the correct torque setting, and avoid after market lugnuts.

i've done thousands of rims from steelies to 24's and never had a wheel even come close to falling off. and i use a torque stick on most of them and if you are using a torque wrench, get it checked from time to time to ensure it is still accurate.

hmmm i wonder if that could have been the cause, I had after market key lugs but I have to because of my rims, stock lugs are too thick to fit in the holes.

are you running the hubcentric rings??? if not, thats your problem right there. most vehicles are designed for the wheel to be centered by the hub, not whe wheel nuts. aftermarket rims are usualy a larger size and with the plastic hub rings will adapt to fit different vehicles. without the rings there is nothing to center the wheels, and the studs take a lot of the load.

Ya I have the rings but there is a crack in that one. But it still seats properly and shouldn't be the problem

Update: thank god it only cost 60 bucks to fix and she's back on the road ready for something else to break lol. No other damage besides the studs thankfully and the shop couldn't tell exactly what caused it. Basically said it could have been any of the things you guys have been saying

yes but a shop has to pay their overhead and charge labor. id guess about 1/2 hour labor, plus parts, shop supplies and taxes.
