new car breakin process?

hey, my dad just bought a new mercedes c55 (with a little bit of my persuading). I was wondering what to do/ not to do while breaking it in. Ive heard to get the oil changed at 500miles then again at 1500 then at 3000 and every 3000 after that. I don't know if thats necessary or not though. Any other tips or advice?

Just don't rag on it for the first 1,000 miles. No oil changes are necessary. Just a waste of money.

After that, Enjoy

Well, like he said, first 1000 miles baby it. However I do think you should change your oil to check it for color and metal shavings. You need to replace your oil filter too. If you're going to drive the **** out of your car its always good to have fresh oil. It doesn't take but $20 to replace your oil and filter if you do it yourself. I'm changing mine every 1,000 miles until 10,000 and the filter every other time. After that, depending on driving habits, I can wait up to 7,000 miles for an oil change. Just make sure you use Mobil 1 5w-30.

No offense but you must have deep pockets to change your oil if you drive an SS/SC. The oil alone in the SS/SC for mobil 1 costs on average $60-65 w/filter if you do it yourself. I have the dealer do it for $10 more. Saves me the headache.

$60-65 for an oil change? Just why is it so much? How many quarts does it take?

7 1/2 quarts including filter. Filter takes at least one its self.

I was shocked as well.

my girlfriends 1999 Ford Contour takes 6 qrts of oil w/filter.

What happened to the days of 4/5 quarts?

It costed me $35 for materials to do it myself (Mobil 1, filter), and $45 to pay someone. I opt for the latter now.

That is severely over filling your engine. 6 Quarts max.

The dealership calls for that amount. I just follow it. They won't be wrong on that. They pulled the information directly from a GM check up page.

Costs for a quart of 5w 30 Mobil 1 varies but it usually sells for almost $6 a quart and the filter is about $10. After tax your looking at about $50.

If your referring to the Duratec 2.5L ford motor it states on the dip stick your a quart low if you don't have 6 in there and opt for only 5. Again, following what her manual and ford say to do.

Benz Tech

Im a benz tech... On the AMG cars I recomend 1st 1000 miles dont go above 4000rpm..
Keep the RPMs varying... No long freeway trip... No wide open throttle ...1000-2000 miles Stay below 5200 rpm... freeway trips ok ... Little bit of wide open throttle.. Atleast a few times every 10+ mile trips.... After that... DRIVE IT LIKE ITS STOLEN... or leased... Whichever you prefer... Some guys at Renntech told me thats how you end up with the most out of the motor... Dont ask me why .. assume its something to do with the way the cylinder walls break in.. They say if broken in with too much throttle early.. Or not enough throttle in that middle period you can loose up to 5-10% percent of possible power... I have never confirmed this personally.. but as far as I know the guys at Renntech know what the hell theyre talking about..
Oh ya.. Dont change the oil... wait till the first A-service is due... Its a waste of money ... Benzs only need oil every 13k miles ... Seen cars with 300k+ miles run on these intervals with ZERO problems relating to the oil quality..

Sorry for the long post ... I get a little carried away ..

OH YA... DONT GO TO JIFFY LUBE !!!!! Take to the dealer if you have to get the oil changed... Besides they wont have the new fleece filters there anyway.. So youll just sit there waiting for them to get one... Dont risk your C55 by taking it to the dummy lube...
(Not an insult to anyone who works for Jiffy... I worked there when I was a kid... Key word being when I was kid.. )

If you use jiffy lube, yes they change the filter. You should also. Of course if you use jiffy lube they will also sooner or later mess up something on your car. You get what you pay for.

yea my dad wouldnt take the c55 to jiffy lube i was just asking if that was normal coz when i get a car i probably will... or not if you guys agree it sucks but anyways. yea the dealership said to bring the car in within 1000-1500 miles and then every 13k after that. i had never heard the rpm thing, ill tell my dad about that.

but why is it that mercs only need the oil changed every 13k? i heard something about porsche cayennes getting the oil changed even less than that.

Benzs (1997-Now) run Mobil 1 and a special cotton/fleece filter... not to mention the V8s hold about 8.5qrts of oil.. AMGs hold 9.5qrts... Oil just lasts longer due to quantity and the quality of the filter used... Hell... At 12-13kmiles when you change the oil... Its pretty dark but still feels very good... looks better than oil that came out of my SVTF after only 3000 miles...
That first check up (1000-3000miles) is just so they can run Codes, Check tire pressure, and make sure everything on the car works and there are no leaks... They dont do anything with the oil at that time except check level .... But like I said I wouldnt even change it until the cluster tells you to...
