Be careful when topping it off...to much oil and you can mess something up. The dipstick does have a 1 quart range where it's safe to run. I haven't changed it yet, but I'm guessing from what you're all saying, it's probably 5.5-6.5, in which case 6 is just fine.

Hi bogout -
The manual says 6 quarts.
I did my first oil change and added 6 quarts and that put it in the middle of the operating range.
I wish these cars had an oil pressure and temp gage - especially since you can monitor coolant temps on the DIC.

You act like Owners manuals have never been wrong before. Judging by the large sample size of SS/SC owners here that have to use 6.5-6.75qt of oil to fill up. I would say the owners manual is incorrect.

the crew at my dealership (when they did my first oil change for free) wrote on the top of the engine with a marker " 7 qts "
kinda bummed that they thought it was cool to write on it with a marker in a very visible spot
but it's obviously more than 6qts to properly fill the 2.0 (assuming draining fully before filling), it's a thirsty little motor

Well I just filled mine today, and the 6 qts I put in put me right in the middle of the operating range on the dipstick. I let it drain for almost an hour, without the filter in. I could add a half quart or so, to put it right at the very top of the dipstick, but then I'd risk causing damage to your engine by having too much oil. I'm content following the owner's manual in this case. To each his own, yes?

Hi folks -
This goes on in the corvette forums as well - People actually argue abouot how much oil needs to go into an LS1/LS6 engine.
Some people think that the dipstick HAS to be at the TOP of the operating range, whereas the truth is that anywhere in the operating range is acceptable.
If you interpret that the oil level on the dipstick has to be at the very top of the operating range, then put in the extra half quart or the whole extra quart.
You will not damage your engine with an extra .5 quart, but you CAN cause engine damage if you put in so much as to negatively affect windage and crankcase pressure.
