I didn't say you're going to ruin your engine with a 1/2 quart. What I'm saying is that 6 quarts, per the owner's manual, is plenty to run the eingine the way it's meant to be ran. When you add more, you do run the risk of causing damage. That said, if you fill it to the top of the operating range, you'll be find. That's what it's an operating range. Just because the engine holds 6.5 quarts, or whatever people manage to fit in there, doesn't mean that's what it calls for.

I have an 05, and my manual says 5qts...I have changed the oil twice and after refilling it came up full...I checked a week or two ago, and it wasn't full but within operating range, so I left it alone...I may contact the dealership and inquire with them

I too wish there was some more guage info pertaining to the engine, but I guess in order for GM to make pretty, they didn't think it was nessecary...

Yep.... when the dealer does it, they've told me that it takes almost 7 qts.

I've overfilled a car before and it's not pretty... lol

I made the mistake of forgetting that 5.0 ford motors on the fox chassis have 2 drain plugs.... and only drained 1.... then added all the new oil....

needless to say, I never did that again!

I was young back then as well, so my ignorance could be attributed to that ..... at least that's what I tell myself.

I remember I bought 6 quarts (thinking it would take around 5.5-6). I was freakin short half a quart. Mine takes 6.5 quarts. The dealership charges $85-90 bucks for an oil change. I figured I would save a lot of money by doing it myself....In the end I only saved like $20-30.

yeah you barely save anything at all when doing it yourself. I priced out doing it myself and it woulda cost be 10 bucks less minus time to do it and well im lazy so there goes a 10 dollar tip for the job well done

It is SS/SC, since this is a Cobalt site I figured people would know that there was no n/a in 05...

anyways, last time I changed the oil, I put 5qts in after letting it drain for 5-10 min while I replaced the filter. My manual states a capacity of 5qts w/filter, now it could be wrong though...I checked the oil after geting it to operating temp (180ish F) and letting it drain back into the oil pan for 3-4 min before checking it. Both times I had the same routine of changing my oil, and I have always changed my own oil, in all my vehichles (except my bike) so I am not a newb when it comes to that...

...By the way my truck takes 6qts for it's 4.8 V8...I can see 6qts in our cars, but 7 seems a little much...we should try and get the "official" word somehow via GM to make sure none of us are screwing up our cars either way.

I dunno man...I got 6 quarts of Mobil 1 for 30 bucks, and the filter for 10. That's less than half of $85-90 in my book...well worth it. Even if the filter is a bitch to reach!
