Oil Changes, how to, how much
Oil Changes, how to, how much
Wondering if anyone knows how easy it is to change the oil on a 2007 Cobalt LT coupe?
I'm looking for 2 things here... What is the best kind, or most widely used, brand of filter? And secondly, how much oil/how many quarts should go in? I'll be using Mobil 1 Synthetic.
Gratzie!

i used to do my mobil one in the 2.2 including filter for about 30 dollars. one 5 quart jug fills it up. oil was about 22 or so, filter was about 8.
if you're not sure how to do it,
do it yourself, don't take it somewhere. the oil filter is under the hood, if you have all the stock plastic on it will be sligthly to the right of the air box that sits on the throttle body. (the big plastic thing in the middle/front) you'll see a big black plastic nut, it's 1 1/4 inches. on the 2.2 i just used a pair of plyers to get it out since there's so much room there.
so what you do is find the oil pan under the car, it's in the front middle between the front wheels. there is one bolt on the rear (towards the back of the car) and that's all you have to take out. make sure you have your oil pan handy because it will start to spew out once you get that bolt loose. once you get the bolt out, you can move on to changing the oil filter.
unscrew the oil filter cap, and the cap will come out with the filter attached. it will be covered in oil, so be careful. I usually stick it right in the new filter's box, and use that to pull the cap off so i don't get oil all over myself. Take the new filter, attach it to the cap, use some of the old oil to lube the rubber piece at the bottom. when you're screwing in the cap for the filter, do NOT overtighten. hand tighten it, and give it a SLIGHT twish with a wrench or plyers or something. if you tighten it too much it's gonna be a bitch to get out next time.
now that that's done, you can probably start with the oil. look underneath, if it's stopped draining put the bolt back in, and just like the filter do not overtighten it.
dump the oil in the engine and call it a day. start the car, check for leaks. that's it.

make sure you get a BIG ass oil pan b/c ALOT comes out, i bought a 7qt one and it was FULL when i was done...
And i believe that it actually takes 6 - 6.5 qt's, atleast mine always has

The ss/sc holds more. I put 6.5 in mine. The 2.2s should hold 5.4 or something like that. I know the cavys with the 2.2 ecotec hold somewhere around there.
my 2.2 was always less than 6. in the 2.0 i put in like 7 to fill it.
but yea, the same thing. i think i got ripped off on my oil pan, because it's a 7.5 quart oil pan, and it overflowed like a **** when i changed the 2.0
i took a big water bottle, filled that up, took an empty oil bottle, filed that, and still overflowed the damn pan!
so, i either got beat on my oil pan, or someone somehow got about 9 quarts into the engine

I love this site!
Thanks D4u2s0t (and others). VERY VERY helpful!
I'll be giving it a go tonight. Sounds like it's not too tough and I'd rather not take it to Wal-Mart or a Quick Stop place.
As far as getting the filter, can I just go to the local joe shmoe shop or Wal-Mart and get one there? And if so, what brand? Sorry to be a pain.
Again, THANK YOU for help!

I use the Purolator Pure One filter, which is their top of the line filter. Normally its something like $9, but Pep Boys frequently has a one cent sale on Purolators, which includes a mail-in rebate. I stock up when they have these sales - just last weekend I bought four more for a total of four cents.
because the drainbolt may be stripped.
I got it. It's draining right now... It wouldn't budge/turn. It was tight... a lot tighter than I thought. It's the first oil change the car is getting, so it came from Lordstown that way...
oh ok, the first oil change is always a bitch, lol. everything seems like its freakin welded on from the factory.
Done... wow, that was pretty easy. Thanks for all the help everyone!!!
I can't believe after 15 some years I've never done my own oil change.
Total cost = $27.00... I was paying upwards of $40 for a synthetic before this.
THANK YOU!
