Opinions on what do with with high mileage car
Hey guys, looking for some opinions here. I have an 08 SS/TC that I bought new. I drive all highway and rack up a lot of highway miles. I'm at a point where I need a more practical car and have been to a couple dealers. Obviously trade-in for the car is hard to swallow. The car is in great shape with 150k. Just this summer was the first time I needed to change my brake pads lol. But even the dealer couldn't believe the car had that much mileage. Anyways, I would be upside-down on trade but was thinking of using my bank to pay off the car loan (to get the title) then selling outright. Then I know I would at least break even (according to KBB). Do you think there is a market for this car with a lot of highway miles, even though it is in great shape? I was thinking $8500 was fair? I dunno, I haven't seen one with miles like mine so I don't know what to expect and I don't know if it would be worth the hassle or just bite the bullet and take the hit on trade.

i guess it depends why the car is no longer practical for you. i have 165K on my LE5, and i thought that was high for an 06!
$8500 probably isnt a bad start, there is a guy around here with just over 100K asking 11K. its worht a shot. what did the dealer offer you for a trade in price?

I obviously have also been thinking of just keeping it, but I could really use a mid-size truck for various reasons. I just don't wanna continue racking up miles within the next year and get to a point where major things start breaking, while I'm still paying for it. Also, if it happens grequesntly then that effects my commute to work everyday if the car is always in the shop. As of right now it hasn't given meproblems (aside from the typical surging/map sensor GMS1 stuff from time to time). I seem to have that pretty much taken care of now though. Dealer said anywhere between $4000 as lowest, to $5500.

If you are doing mostly highway driving and are expecting decent gas mileage, you will never find it in a midsize truck.
That said, there is nothing wrong with high mileage. These Ecotec motors are stout little motors. Keep driving it.

Just mention that its literally like ALL highway miles when u go to sell it. When im looking for cars. I would RATHER have a car with low miles but if the price is right and the car doesnt look like it has 150k in it, id still buy it. With that said. U would definitely have to take a bit of a hit on price. If it were my car. I would try to sell it for like 10k. If u get no bites id just keep it

Unfortunately I think you picked a bad category of car for high mileage usage.
The people looking for a high mileage beater, generally aren't looking performance.
The people looking for a high mileage project, generally aren't looking for cobalts.
I was willing to buy my Vette with 77K on it beause it's a project... and a Vette.
I bought my DD jetta with 135K on it because it was cheap, cheap to fix, easy to maintain, and good on gas. You're cobalt doesn't fit too many of those categories.
You'd almost have to find someone really desperate to get one of these cars or a shop who wants a test car.
Good luck.

Ya, like I said, I have a 45-50min highway commute to work (which in reality takes a about the same time as people that have a 10 mile commute into the city, near where I live) and my family has a cabin 2hrs away that we go to on weekends etc. So i def put a ton of miles on, but they are all pretty low-stress. My only concerns with keeping it is just if stuff starts going wrong then it becomes major inconvenience to get to work. Also, i found out that most of the problems I have encountered so far (as minor as they have been) require taking it to the dealer which can be expensive. I have a good relationship with 2 local shops around here and neither are very willing to work on the car.

then find a new shop.
these cars arent rocket science.
i wouldnt buy it.
some one tried to sell me a 2008 SS/ with 170k on it for 6500 cash.
i passed.
i dont care if some one tells me its all highway miles, like every single high mileage listing says that.
plus, miles are miles....

Honestly, if you drive that much I would find a good mechanic that is going to take care of your car, or learn some things you can do, and keep it until it dies.
If the car is in that good of shape and taken care of, I do not think you will have many issues other than wear items such as brakes, tires, alternator, battery, etc.
It is going to be more cost effective to keep the car than it would be to pay it off and try to sell it.
How much do you owe still if you do not mind, that is a big factor as well.
