Pushing the Limits on a 2.2L
Pushing the Limits on a 2.2L
Are there any estimates on whats the max power you can push through the 2.2L engine? I thought I heard it was about ~280 or something like that? Can anyone varify this? Would the tranny (both manual and auto) beable to handle this as well? I'd really like to push atleast 250 from a stock engine (stock as far as just putting full header back exaust and turbo in it). However I dont want to have pistons shooting through the hood of my car or breaking. As the Ecotec motors have been out a while any word on how high you can push them?
And if you wanted to go over that magical crapping out number, what would you have to switch out with reinforced parts? Thanks.

The engine internals as it was manufactures will fail when the engine is producing more than 280 HP. Basically the crank, rods, block can't handle more than that. So if you get a turbo and you put a lots of boost and HP and the engine and it start producing more than 280 HP chances are it's gonna break real soon.
I figure a turbo will push it about 215 horse from 145.Intake / Headback exaust will give it another 25 (est) so that would be about 240. I would only push about 8psi through a turbo system as it boost it about 70-80HP.
Would be pretty fast, however kinda sucks that the engine can only handle about 280.
Wanted to throw some heads/cam in it too but that might be to much for the engine to handle.
Could the engine handle 250 HP pretty good or would it be to much strain on it?

Thats pretty sweet. The engine handles the power pretty well. It seems I should have no problem pushing it into the 300 range with a turbo and reinforce some things here and there
awseome find!
if you look on the jbody.org, there was a guy named josh who ran a 2.2 eco 234 HP and 239 TQ at 7 psi, he took it up to 13psi on some occasions, if i remember he was running 12's on a basicly stock motor, and i think it did eventually blow up though, but he ws asking for it.
The block is great, so long as your rods don't snap and go through it. I'd get forged rods and lower compression to 8.5:1, 9:1 if you feel lucky, bigger injectors is a must, slap an intercooled turbo kit on there and you're golden for a fast daily driver.

Well for the turbo kit I want to get it comes with a Intercooler and (2) 400cc injectors. I only plan on pushing the boost about 8psi as the site says thats safe on stock. I wouldnt push the car past 8PSI but I would like to leave the compression at 10:1.
I figure I would then throw a new header, cat, muffler and 3" down pipe all the way through and call it a day (kit comes with K&N intake). By then it should push about 240/50hp on everything stock hopefully.
Then just use it as a daily driver. Dyno it and take it to the track to see what it runs too.

Remember for the SS supercharged they get new pistons and rods and thats only 205 HP. So the GM engineers thing to maintain reliability you need those addt. parts to the ecotec.Moderators: Also this thread really belongs in the 2.2 L section and not the general cobalt section.
Where would I get stronger/better connecting rods and pistons for this car? I'll have to get them installed at the same time I get the turbo installed. Gunna be a costly install for both but it will be worth it.
Well I found some connecting rods that handle up to 700horse. Just need pistions to go with them.

Just about everything you would need to build a bulletproof eco....
I've never dealt with mantapart before, so I can't comment on their business practices,
but they have an assload of parts none-the-less.....

Thats pretty sweet! They are kind of expensive so I think I'd only get the pistons from them and go with the rods from another site which has them for cheaper thanks for the link!
personally i would stay away from mantapart

Hey thanks Redd, carcustoms seems pretty sweet.
Well it looks like I'll have to go the best intake money can buy for the LS, and the best header, cat, and muffler I can find with a 3" pipe. After my engine warrenty is over I'll have my turbo bought and the pistons and rods already. So once I hit that 36000 or 3 yr mark I'll have something to install it on =)
Or say I get to 20,000 miles and the car has no probs I'll void the warrenty. Plus it will be about 4 grand just to get the parts, then another 2 or so to have them installed. I'm just so excited to get a Cobalt LS!!!! I want it now damn it!
