Radio replacement on unoptioned LS?
Radio replacement on unoptioned LS?
Hey all,
Just wondering if there are any snags in removing a radio on a base 2005 Cobalt LS. The car has nothing but an auto trans for options. Do I still need one of the expensive bypass adapters or can I just use a plastic harness kit to put a different radio in?

I heard yesterday that if you changed the radio on a Cobalt with auto transmission without the controller it would lock the transmission into it's safety gear (2nd gear) and that it would stay stuck there. I don't know if that's true though...
we put two different radios in my G/F's automatic cobalt and neither of the times did anything bad happen, even the door chimes remained. Proceed to remove radio
Well that's what I've been told at Future Shop, the guy charged me 400-500$ to install my double din radio in my Cobalt, he said I needed all kind of adapter, one for the steering wheel, one for the radio, one for the antenna, he said the car computer ran through the radio and if done improperly it would deactivate the airbag and what not... I'm not going to pay 400-500$ for sure lol
That's the biggest piece of bullshit I ever heard.
OP, you'll only need the $10 harness for this car. You don't have steering wheel controls. Yes, you'll need an antenna adapter, but that's another $10. Dash kit, and you should be set.

My double-din radio has been sitting in my drawer for a year already. I always installed radios by myself but this car is a real mess, I've never seen so many wires and adapter needed. I had to return metra adapters twice back to amazon, I can't seem to find which one goes with my damned car. I have a third metra adapter sitting home and it still doesn't fit in my car, the plastic plug is inversed... I just kind of gave up trying to install the radio in my car
