the story

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Two people were killed in a major accident on Interstate 77 at Westinghouse Boulevard in south Charlotte just after noon Thursday.

A child was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center from the scene. One person with life-threatening injuries was rushed to the hospital by ambulance and a third person who did not have life-threatening injuries was also transported, MEDIC officials said.

Troopers said a woman was going far too fast merging from Interstate 485 onto southbound I-77 and had to swerve to avoid hitting a truck. She skidded across the median, through the cables and went airborne before running head-on into a pickup truck in the northbound lanes. The Highway Patrol said the driver of the car and the passenger in the pickup truck were pronounced dead at the scene.

The 4-year-old child that had to be airlifted was in the car with the woman who was killed.

“The child was in a safety seat. The child lived but the driver, it's too small of a car, too high rate of speed,” said bystander Robert Litaker.

Troopers estimate the woman was going about 100 miles per hour when she lost control. They said speed was obviously a factor in the crash.

The impact was so violent even the car’s engine was tossed out on the road.

“(It was) pretty horrific. As soon as she hit it, it just disintegrated,” Litaker said of the car. “There’s no sense in driving that kind of speed in this city.”

Battalion Chief David Rose of the Charlotte Fire Department said the sad part is that the crash could have been prevented. He said too often rescue crews see the deadly results of speeding.

“It’s a tragedy for a couple of families today,” he said. “In 25 years, this is just I-77. I’ve been here before.”

I-77 northbound was closed for about two and a half hours while troopers investigated the crash and crews cleaned up the scene.

The victims names have not been released

Anyone know who this was? Blue 06 SS/SC. Driver killed instantly, child passenger in critical condition after airlift.

That is absolutely brutal. The people in the Cobalt had no chance. The S/C ended up a good 100m away from the car. And the block......holy crap......it is on the other side of the road.

RIP for those who died.

Wow, that is really bad.

My prayers go out to their family and friends.

Edit: It was a female driver with a kid in the car doing 100mph? What is wrong with people?

Yeah scary stuff. A few times I have hit 100 entering onto a 4-lane cause it is so much fun, but only when the highway was deserted. Never in rush-hour traffic.

Said she had to swerve and lost control? I guess I'm lucky that never happened to me.

This is very sad for everyone involved.
As for this being "an adult driver" there is no way to know that yet. These days, far to many "kids" are having kids.

I just meant that young kids often have that feeling of invulnerability. Adults have seen more bad ones like this and already know it can happen to anyone.

And I know that adults do as many stupid things as kids. The woman in this wreck was an adult and probably the mother of that child, so sad.
