Let me set the scenario:
My brother, sister, and I all have Cystic Fibrosis, it destroys our lungs. My brother is the worst, and at only 39 yr old, needs a double lung transplant

I got a phone call at 5:46 AM this morning. It's my brother's transplant team, telling us to get to Lexington, KY by 7:15. I get everyone out of bed, get the car started and are on the road by 6:03 AM (5 people are going)! I fill up the car at the local station, and I am on I-75. I never let up, unless a truck is passing another car, but my Cobalt ran 85-95 MPH for an hour and a half! I even got the car upto redline at times. Most cars will start to vibrate at this speed. Not the cobalt, I barely had my hands on the wheel. This car is a dream to drive. The electro-hydraulic steering worked flawlessly.

Sadly to say, it was a "dry run", both of the donor lungs had pneumonia setup in them, and my brother couldnt use them. Yeah, I know it's dangerous to drive that fast, but I had a medical emergency, and the flashers on. To my surprise, everyone got out of my way when they could. I travelled 105 miles in an hour 10 mins. We were sitting at the hospital at 7:23 (that inculded Lexington city driving as well)

Afterward, my eyes were stinging and arms cramping. I dont advise doing this regularly. We needed a good sporty car, that was easy on gas, and was dependable. I think we bought one I'm so proud of "Scarlett" she didnt let us down.

One last note...it wasnt in an SS, it was the LS Sedan (loaded with sport package)

I know what you mean man. Just becareful driving fast. My fiancee' has CF too and its a struggle to deal with. Shes not bad enough for a lung transplant but she is sure thinking about it, but its rough to think about for me. Also, CF is just plain expensive but shes worth it!

thanks guys. I know the speeding is wrong, but it's kind of a necessity. If the donor lungs arent installed ASAP, there is a worse chance or rejection, so we had to get there. Sad thing is, I get to do it all over again when they call

How long is the waiting list? I am a dental professional and I have heard it's a long wait. It would be nice to hear from someone who is going through this personally so I can pass on info to my patients. I hope all of you are well and recieve the best of care from the meds in Kentucky (I know they will try the best they can to help you out ). I want to hear a success story about your oldest brother really soon!!!!

 

dental professional? uhh....this has to deal with lungs. But sure, the waiting list is long, but new legislature was passed back in April specifies that people with life threatening diseases are bumped to the top, while people who neglect their body (such as a smoker) are bumped down! But my brother was put on the list back in December, he got his first call on Monday. What is that, like 9 months?
